Well is it smoking? You'll hafto see when you get it apart. We can't just magicly see if your engine needs maintence over the internet:p

no its not smoking but i heard that if the heads arent maintained then they can get to far and you half to buy a new head. something about it beating the valve seats in or something.

were your valves always at spec? I imaging thats what causes this

Well do you race it and how often. If you just play ride just check the valves, If you race it get the cylinder honed, replace valve seals and resurface the valves. It's hard to say b/c I refreshed everything in my quad but I rev the hell out of it for 2 hours every weekend.

The first time I rebuilt my bike I did the samething your doing and had no problem with my head. Just make sure your valves are to spec and you should be good.

Its a 4 stroke guys.. you dont need to redue the head every time you rebuild it.. you shouldn't even have to replace the rings one a season if you take care of it , but letting it warm up real good everytime before you ride.. i mean a moto is only 5-7 minutes long usally....Yes its a 450 and its more high strung and you should pay more attention to it, but just check your valves in spec and warm up ure quad good and take care of it and it will take care of you for a long time :D

thanks everone for the help. i tore it down last nite all the way to the piston. it wasnt as hard as i thought it was goin to be. the hardest thing was getting it on tdc.

how do you check the 2 valves that go up into the cam assembly that have the caps? i know the specs and what they should be at but dont know how to check them while everything is together.

thanks
jerry

Here's a link. Its the same procedure as the CRF450 atleast when you get inside that is.
