what are you calling the brake stay ? if you have everything off that side of the axle it should slide right thru, unless maybe your bearings are messed up

It has been awhile since I last did it, but I remember removing everything on the right side of the axle, and leaving the rear sprocket side alone.

First,
I removed both rear wheels.
Then,
Remove the right side hub. (Same side as the rear brake rotor)
NOTE: If you are replacing your axle with a different one, remove the left side hub too at this point as well as the rear sprocket off of the sprocket flange).
Remove the two mounting bolts of the rear brake caliper... Keeping the hydraulic line still in tack.
Loosen the large axle lock nut and remove the axle clip off the axle.
At this point, the rear brake rotor should be able to slide off the axle.
I believe at this point, you should be able to hit the right end of the axle with a rubber mallet to knock the axle through the other side of the swing arm/axle carrier.

Waa La... Hopefully I gave accurate information.

Good luck!
