the 250ex you have to dissassmble the engine to CLEAN the oil filter, its just a screen. THe 400ex oil filter and everything else you need to know about changing your oil is here CLICK THIS (http://www.atvriders.com/articles/oilchange400ex.html)

It amazes me how many people won't spring for a $20 shop manual and expects everyone to walk them thru every single proceedure.

rofl. if you bought a oil filter for your 250ex you just got ripped off. just use it for your 400ex is you are sure its the same. i def. know on the honda recon/250ex that there is NO oil filter but it is a screen inside the engine and its very compliated to clean and requires you to split the cases im pretty sure. You dont need it done unless your engine grenades. the 250ex motor will go through hell

yep they are exactly the same. So i dont need to try and clean the screen. do you think just changeing the oil will be alright. I don't want to keep runing it on that screen if im supose to clean it.

so i should or shouldn't worry about cleaning the oil filter?

i have oil and airl filters so i should just change the oil and air filter not worry about the screen?

if i don;t clean the screen is it going to suck away my power?

thanks you guys

man i got to get rid of this 250 time for a 400

My 200s has the screen on the drain plug, It is probably just like your 250, I always just blow it out and make sure the screens ok, put some oil in her and run it till she sinks deep enough to have to change the water/oil again. I'm not trying to sound like i don't take care of my stuff, i change the oil in my 400 ex monthly but those old hondas will really hold up to alot until theres water in it. I wouldn 't be to worried about the filter in the 250.
