I have a 10:1 wiseco 416. stock cam. I was wondering if it is harmful to run 100 or above octane and if not. whats the benefit?

no, it wont hurt anything. a good race fuel will burn cleaner and cool than pump gas.

You really wont see any benefit other than a good smell and a cooler engine. there will not be any power increase from it.

Don't. Higher octane is only helpful when necessary, and you would only be wasting your cash. You will see no performance gains what so ever, and with just 10:1 it is certainly not necessary.

Sorry, underpowered summed it up really well.

Umm, 100 is race gas:rolleyes:

unless he is getting 100 by mixing, you can buy 100 octane race fuel. i know Klotz makes it (cause we sell it!)

I was considering running sum XC races. And was just gonna run the race 100 at the races. If it will make it run a lil cooler i dont care to waste 10 dollars extra at the track. I run 93 at home

what is the main difference between race gas and normal gas and what do u have to do to be able to run on alcohol on a 400ex

most race fuel is leaded, which is the main difference. but it is also of a higher octane than what you buy at the pumps. it fights spark knock and is used with higher compression.

to run alky, you need to have your barb set up for it. youalso have to take better care of your fuel system than with gasoline. Alky attracts moisture. there are a few guys running alky on here that will be able to go into farther detail on what is involved in the switch to alky.

High octane gas burns slower. That means it burns longer (and hotter). You won't see any benefit from it at all. Not unless you set your motor up for it. That means high compression piston at the least.

I agree, but race fuel does not burn hotter. It is leaded and higher octane to prevent predetonation (hence cooler burning). If it burned hotter than pump gas, everyone running high compression pistons would be grenading their motors due to detonation.

if you want mmore power from gas, your going to have to get some oxygenated stuff like u4. i have heard from many people that in a 450 you can actualy expect a 2-3 hp increase. the only draw back is it's expensive.

whats not expensive in this hobby?

If you don't have the compression requiring it, higher octane fuel will cause hard starting. It takes more pressure to get it to ignite. Your power increase comes from having more compression, not the race fuel, the race gas allows you to safely run the higher compression. That is pretty basic, but I believe it sums it up.
