View Full Version : School bus for a quad hauler

tazman7

So I just found what some would consider a deal on an old school bus. I was thinking it would be cool to leave the first couple rows of seats in the bus so people can ride with to go to the race track, then rip out the rest of them to haul tools and quads in....Do you think this is a good idea or do you think it is gay? haha

Its defenently not a show truck

lol dude, I actually had the same idea.... I wanted to customize the back, and make the whole rear section fold down so it's a ramp, and then the front seating are for passengers I wanted to get some big bench seats and have em set up almost like in a circle, some on the sides, and one facing forward. Then put like a tv and PS@ and stuff for passengers, haha, that'd be awesome.

i thought about this a while ago, great idea

They only want $900 for the damn thing but they said that all of the seats were ripped out- I figured I could just go to where the school district keeps their buses and ask to buy a few- Then you could just throw in some cots and sleep in the damn thing too....throw a Fox racing sticker on the side and your set- haha!!!!

I bet if I went to the tomorrow and said I will give you $600 cash right now they would take it- who knows how long it has sat there- And if that didnt work out I could just turn it into a party bus and drive over to NIU Campus---

How much would liability cost on one of these bad boys?

04-16-2006, 05:51 PM
Not sure about liability, you may have to get a different license though, for driving that, like class c or whatever it is. Where in illinois are u? Near dubuque IA at all? We should meet up and ride once I move out there, maybe you can drive with your school bus, haha:D

I am from Rochelle- Thats about 2-2.5 hours from Dubuque (sp?)

I am going to really think about this bus- that would be fun/funny. I want to get an enclosed trailer but they are alot of money and hard to pull around in the wind and stuff....Not like this thing wouldnt be but oh well...

Another idea just crossed my mind- If something went wrong or it was a big p.o.s I could just take it to the Speedway and run it in the school bus figure eights...:muscle:

Ill be 21 in July---

Hell, why not do it! We converted a moving van with a cab over into our toy hauler. Room enough for our bed, fridge, microwave, storage and of course the back is all for the toy.
But I did see somewhere else where someone had used a bus for one. They said they put a couple of beds in it, sink and the whole nine yards.

I've heard of people doing that before. It sounds like a good idea to me. One of my friends has an old short bus that has a stove, some cabinets, and a bunk in the back. With a bus that big you could fit alot of stuff in there.

bulkdriverlp
04-16-2006, 06:21 PM
a good idea definately. in MI you dont need a CDL to drive a bus if its not for commercial use. i think all you do i re-title it as an RV. get an old camper of some kind and take the fridge, furnace, and everything else out and put it in your bus. the repairs on that will be pretty costly though.

we used to have a a bus that we would take to the races, but with that one we pulled a trailer and ripped all the seats out and had couches and a tv in there. now my friend has one and they made the whole back end so it folds down as a ramp and you can drive right in.

youll need to wide the rear doorway forsure, but if you got the eagerness, go for it. does the engine run good? is it diesel?

you could have alot of fun, but check out the insurance first.

Yeah my grandpa is a fabricator so making a ramp for the back would be no big deal-

They say it starts and runs good- It is gas- I havnt seen it in person I just found it online tonight.

Pimp-mobile...

I'm pretty sure you won't need a CDL if you don't have all the seats in it/ don't carry over 16(?) passengers.

Just be careful about the RE-liability of it, $900 is a good price but thats an older bus so you probably don't want to start putting much money in it to keep it going

Some people down the street from me did that to a full sized bus. There were couches and stuff in there. It was pretty sweet. They also had a ladder up to the top, so you could sit up there and watch or take pictures. Go for it

I am near Dallas.. I'll have to take new pics tomorrow, I can't find none of the ones I had of it loaded up..

I got it from my brother he had put a steel tubing frame around the whole rear behind the seat and added some chain and made some fold up bunks down the side, the steel tubing he used was to bulky for me I took it all out, but it was a good idea.. He cut the left half of the rear and added hinges so it actually has 2 doors that fold open but come together when shut. Never did make a ramp we used 12' 2x12's boards.

It's got the international gas motor in it not sure of the exact size right now. Needs a tuneup. Has airbrakes. Everything was working our last trip in it but that's been almost 2 yrs. I recently cranked it up to move it around back. Still old yellow paint.

When I first got it I was getting my CDL excempt meaning that since it had air brakes and was a certain weight I had to have class "A". My brother now tells me I don't need the class A because it's under the weight restrictions and only has passenger capacity of 12 or less.

I got it insured under RV insurance for like $50 a year was really cheap.

Right now I use it for storage and was planning on moving it to land in Oklahoma if I ever find some in the hills for storage there also..

Money does talk ...
:D

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow or the next day..

Later,
Chad

Yup I went riding with some people who were like that... Only it was a short bus, but they had 3 quads on it, and had couches to sleep in also.

I Have an almost identical bus. Mine is Titled as an 83. stripped down to seat 15 in bus seats the rest is full of couches ( party bus) pretty cool, but it is a pretty big liability, so I am the only one who drives it. Title it as an RV, which mean it will have to be inpected and re titled, unless the people who own it now already had it changed.

Expect about 6 mpg if it is a 366 like ours. if you have the money getting a slightly newer diesel is worth it. they don't sell for much more, but get much better mileage and power.

Insurance is somewhat of a challenge but is cheap. Ask me anything you mgiht want to know.

my wife just called the insurance company (allstate) and told them what we were doing. Using it to camp out of, wasn't retitled or nothing, and yes gas mileage sucks. (get a large group and they can split the gas)
It's full of some plumbing supplies back toward the rear. As you can tell feom the pics it has a love seat, it folded out to a bed. The 3 rows of seats with the back off the center row and the 1st row turned around, had some half *** storage built under them. My brother had it rigged somehow where those seats also made a bed on each side.
We have had about 3 3 wheelers 2 quads a dirt bike and 2 mini in there before. And still had a 16' trailer on the rear. I wish I could find those pics of it loaded up..
Having air brakes was nice, I tapped into the airtank and I had compressed air while out riding, was sweet having air tools to work on stuff.

A/C was our only problem it's not insulated very well and I only had a small window unit trying to cool it off.

Now I just want a 3/4 - 1 ton cargo van it'll suit my family just fine.

My brother has another bus, it's disael. He has a freakin full size refrigartor in it... TV satelitte, dvd, microwave. I wouldn't doubt if it's got a washer/dryer on board. He doesn't load rides in it, he pulls
a trailer for his lawn tractors pullers!

If I ever start using it again I am just gonna run hammocks from side to side across the rear when unloaded.. And invest into more A/C's and generator.

later,
Chad:D

Same here. There is a guy(about 45 or so) that lives down the road from me that races harescrambles on a CR250. Anyway, he bought it from his uncle, painted it Honda Red, threw on a few Moose stickers, a PS2, a bunk bed, and a wheel chock. He stuck a piston over the gearshifter for added coolness. I see it everyday, but just saw the inside of it for the first time last weekend at LTM.
