Much more to it than you think. It may sound like an easy concept but its best to buy a kit if your that serious about it. Youll need the ducting, blow off valve, custom exhaust, and of course a proper size turbo charger. You'll have to either try and find a fuel injection kit for it (if theyre even made for a 400ex?) or make sure that your carb is jetted right so the mixture isnt gonna get leaned out when the turbo starts kicking in. You may have to get a lower compression ratio piston due to the added compression of it, and then of course be able to set the turbo up to run at a certain psi.
I really dont think it would be worth doing it due to the 400ex being air cooled. You'd more than likely have to run pure race gas in it or you might get a case of detonation. I say just build the quad up really good and your 440 should scream! But if you get around to doing it though make sure to take lots of pics and do a write up:)

if you are serious about putting a tubro on a 400ex you should just buy a kit and save your self all the headache and time trying to make your and trying to the the quad to run right. (my two cents)

Ive seen kits for a 400ex and they were 3500. For the whole turbo kit. And all need hardware:D

Ya man. you'd be better off buying a kit.. theres a lot more than a turbo and a pipe running back to the intake.. you also need a wastegate to regulate boot pressure,a blow off valve to control compressor surge,an intercooler to keep intake temps low(though not really needed at low boost), and some sort of fuel management, oh then u have to route oil lines to the turbo, then make flanges for the turbo, then for the wastegate, then make a manifold.. id rather pay al lil more to buy a kit that i know that'll work..there'll be a lot less headaches:ermm:

IMO. you can get a lot better power in a naturally aspired small engine than you can in a turbo. The NA engine should have much better throttle response at a much lower price.

yea thats true too. u gotta hate that turbo lag..:scary: But, there would be a lot more potential for more power if the bottom end was built tougher, with a stronger rod, crank, piston and whatnot. then u could add more boost... but that would be a lot of pocketchange tho...:ermm:

if you were using a turbo the turbo lag wouldnt really matter because your not using it on a track on in the woods. you would use a turbo on the dunes. the lag would only be a problem when drag racing people.

kms turbo causts like $4000. it brings the quad up to about 48hp.

way to expensive. i would just hybird you quad for that price because it be better and cheeper then for less money than turbo

true but as long as you keep your revs up u dont suffer turbo lag, the same as in a car. i think u can buy just the efi setup from somewhere it might be kms but im not sure. then u just need a turbo and its parts from a small 4cycl car or streetbike or skidoo. i would get all the hd componets as well cause you will be putting alot more stress on your engine. then you have to figure out where to mount the intercooler.....

heres some pics of a turbo ex, its not my quad

I thought about building a drag 4 wheeler w/ a turbo.

That's the biggest F'in waste of money I have ever seen. I can make a 400ex motor put out 40HP without any kind of forced induction for less that half of what that kit costs. Not to menting the quad would be totally useless for anything but drag racing.

Very true. The power would also be better.

i disagree, you will be putting out close to 60 hp, with a modded engine probs around high 70s to 80s hp. if you built it yourself it wouldnt cost so much and would be well worth the money.

That turbo ex is my cousins. It is pretty cool and crazy fast. He put a lot of time into it and it did payoff. He has it tweaked perfectly now and the think just rips.

Never tested it as far as I know. The only tests that have been done is draging other quads.
