i use a baldor buffing motor with two 10 inch wheels...one side for tripoli compound and the other for white rouge on the other.
go to www.eastwoodcompany.com
also before any buffing occurs i sand the cases from 280 grit to 400 grit to get it all smooth. And i have small wheels for my air diegrinder etc..........

That is Sweet. Can you get a Picture of the front of your 400 with that Scoop? I want to see it. Also how hard was it to put on? Maybe you could do a review a lot of Guys are buying them that would be a good review to have.
How much would it Cost to have my Exhaust Polished or Powdercoated? Thanks
here is a front view. It is simple really,,,,,,,,,first take of the lights....most of you have that already. Then i took my dremel with the the cutting drill bits and cut off the headlight area,,,,you know where the lights sit in,,,,,up towards the tank cover trying to keep the same level. Then you need to cut a hole in the existing front nose plastic to allow air to get into the oil cooler,,,,,leaving a 1.5 inch area around the hole for strength,,,,,,,then drill 4 15/64 holes,,,,,,be care ful by the tank so you dont drill into the tank,,,,,,then pop the plastic rivet things in ,,,,,,,,and it on..........it comes with instructions and a diagram.

Just checking to make sure you ride it, not just spend money on it.
Thought you might have been one of those car owner guys that spend 10 years restoring a car, but never drive. Just start it to hear how good it sounds. I hate those guys. Things with wheels were meant to be ridden!

After you polish things, what kind of clear coat do you use if any? You don't polish everything every time you ride, do you?

You should send a picture into dirtwheels or atv sport. Then like maybe leave your number or email address and pick up some business if they'd publish it in the letter's section

all of my stuff is "raw",,meaning not clear coated. So yes it all muxt be polished at some time to take off the tarnish. Although not after every ride.
BUT.......the clear powdercoat i use now does not take away muchof the shine of the polished aluminum at all......i willpost a pic of a grab bar i did for old#7 tomorrow ........

chris how long of a project is it to take off the side cases to powdercoat them? Ive been wanting to do it for a while but im paranoid about taking everything off.
Mystic,,,,,,,,,
its really not that bad. The biggest hassle on the 400 i think is the stator on the left case. The rest is pretty easy. Just get new gaskets to go back together with..
..like you didnt already know that:rolleyes: :D ;)
mysticfalcon
08-24-2002, 11:21 PM
believe it or not but I actualy knew about the gaskets. Just after looking at the pics in the service manual it looks realy complicated but so did tearing everything apart for my 416 and i pulled that off without a hitch. I just needed someone to tell me that its not a month long project. thanks

on the polishing make sure all parts of the surface are smooth.....like down to 400 grit or finer. Then use a high rpm wheel of some sort,,,,,what ever you have available to you....and some good rouge to bring out the shine.

Do I apply the aluminum polish with a cloth, then use a wheel to buff it?
well you need a compound that you apply to the wheel,,,friction melts the compound an it stays on the wheel........and it has a mild cutting action to buff the piece........then you put than on the part.
Go to www.eastwoodcompany.com click on metal buffing/finishing and they have small arbors, wheels, etc and tha compounds for polishing
i have a 01 400 ex with stock tires that are on there way to the trash
