The quad is very close to stock, Just the front bumper, Nerfs, Silencer and Carb are non-stock. Of those, I have the origional silencer and footpegs sitting on the floor(one peg is bent). The carb is a 38mm Keihin and I was told the origional was scrap due to sitting in some guys shed for years. The origional skid plate is very beat-up and the left lower a-arm has a BIG bend near the frame. I was told the engine has never been opened and at a quick glance, I see no rounded nut edges, so..... The plastic is showing its age and one crack on the left front fender. Was also told the sprockets, chain, and tires are origional but I'll take that with a large grain of salt. Is that seat cover stock? Don't know if it had anything printed on the sides.

Anybody know what jets and needle I should hope are in that 38mm Keihin, at least to the point that I won't burn it up? I haven't opened it up yet but I will be to make sure its close.

I'm working on the front calipers right now, the right side was hanging up and now it needs new caliper pistons/seals (pistons were very brittle). Would excess heat cause that or do they just get brittle over time? I've been searching and found one post suggesting I don't need to put those nickel sized spacers back in the caliper pistons. Is this a good idea or does it put too much stress on the outer edge of the pistons?

Thanks!

For the 86/87 years I really like the Blue. It looks like it needs general service and freshening up. Did you buy it local?

$3900 might have been a little high but don't worry about doing stuff to it as long as you keep all the stock parts. It'll be worth more if you ever decide to sell it.

That seat cover doesn't look stock but may be a good replacemant. The original had HONDA printed on the back, but nothing on the sides. It's cool that it has original decals.

I would hold on to that beast and keep it as close to stock as possible. Or if you do mod it out some, keep all the original parts so if you ever go to sell it. Nice R BTW!!!!

Update- The quad appears to be as origional as the guy said. Was into the clutch area today and the origional basket has some notches I filed out of it. Will replace it when I sell my dirt bike but it should get me by for now. Was trying to set up the carb yesterday and was getting somewhere untill I spit the chain and wedged it between the front sprocket and swinger. Had to take it home to get it out. It needs a new chain and sprockets anyway and fortunately it didn't get anywhere near taking out the case.

Biggest reason for the thread update is the jetting thing. I'll put some info up first:

600 ft elevation
Bone stock 86 250r, stock pipe, FMF power core silencer
38mm Air stricker (dude I bought it from put it on)
170 Main
55 Pilot
DDJ Needle
7 Slide
Air lid is on and will likely stay on.

The main was looking okay untill I realized I may have been close to starvation (near reserve) so I need to re-check it.
Biggest problem was a sputter from about 1/8 to maybe half. I dropped the needle one groove but that's when the chain ended my day, before I could get a good read.

I've been through the search and came across several mentions of the CEJ and CEL needles. I'm just starting to wrap my head around the whole needle physics so be easy on me. From my reading, it seems the 38mm Air Stricker may be a little too big for the stock 250, I hope I can get it to work.

Questions:
1) Do I appear to be heading in the right direction from my ramblings above?
2) I have the air screw backed out to 3.5 so I'm wondering if I should go down 1 or 2 steps?
3) How much should I worry about the slide?
4) Do you think I should just go down in fives on the mains? (I'm not the kind of guy that will re-jet when the weather changes)
5) Suggestions on the needles. Like if I end up at the last groove, do I change to a different taper or a different length or is it more complicated than that?

Any or all suggestions or tips are appreciated. :)

That is a really great find you got there. Like othe people have been saying keep her stock. I know some people say moding it out is ok as long as you keep the stock parts, but I'm against that. The stock 250r's are hard to find, let alone one that's almost all original, and has never had the motor apart like the one that you have. Keep it stock, and enjoy it. You will get alot more looks from that stocker, then you will a modded one.
