Shopping for a new MX quad to build looking to go with a YFZ. I found a 05 for 5500.00 new or a 06 for 6500.00 new. I race MX and plan on doing a full Houser/Elka LT Suspension Package, and just add a Pro-flo kit with a full Yoshi for motor mods. I heard the 06 has lots of changes not to mention is now a true 450cc but is it that much more improved vs a 05 to justify spending a 1000.00 more for it? I am coming off a full aftermarket KFX400 that I have been racing and winning regularly on, but feel the YFZ will make me even faster. I am just looking to buy a quad that I can spend my money on the suspension/chassis department, and have a strong motor with just a exhaust system. I really dont want to go into huge mods like I did to my KFX just to run up front, my local district is a 95% YFZ field, so it isnt like the others guys have crazy motors almost all of them have a exhaust and cams at the most an run up front while my KFX has everything from top to bottom and in between just to be as fast, not to mention is like 60lbs heavier.

i just bought the 06 YFZ....stock for stock the 06 is better then the 05.....

buttttttt....if you plan on heavily modfiying the quad...either will be a good choice.

btw...ive had a 04, 05 and now 06;)

Thanks for the insight, I do plan on heavily modifying the suspension and chassis but my goal is to keep the engine relativley stock to help save costs, and keep things simple I spent 3 yrs. and lots$$$ learning the do's and dont's on my KFX motor. But I also dont want to cut myself short by going from a high hp KFX to a milder YFZ to save a buck. My main question I guess is how much stronger is the updated 06 engine stock for stock vs the 05.

After riding the 06, both myself and my brother felt the 06 rev'd faster and was smoother pulling then his 05. The YFZ is a rocket...the 06 is a rocket but smooth:p

I could have taken a 05 left over, but i do not plan on may upgrades so I opted for the 06.

I bought my 06 for about the same reason. I had a real strong 465ex. Just wanted less weight but similar power with it being reliable. And the other updates they did on the 06 just pushed me over the edge. (fixed electrical problems, 2 piston rear caliper, thicker seat, round housing carrier)

My 06 compared to my 465, power feels similar, 465 had more torque, but the 450 revs way faster and higher. With just the cam mod, pro flow intake and a pipe.

The longer stroke (450 cc's), round housing swingarm, 2-piston brakes, improved rear link, and fixed electrical problems was all I needed to sell my '04 and buy an '06. The '06 motor pulls as hard as my DASA built, stroked '04 450.
