A friend of mine currently rides an old Honda 250X. He has just started riding, and he is getting to where he is OK on it and he is looking to move up to something faster.
He is leaning towards getting a new 300EX later this year. There is certainly nothing wrong with a 300EX, but I told him that I think he should go for a 400EX instead.
I told him that a 300EX really isnt going to be much faster than his 250X. I told him that he is going to get bored with the 300EX in about a year and should just go for the 400EX now.
What do you all think about this advice? The guy is a typical new rider. He lacks good throttle and clutch control and he almost seems to be afraid of jumping, so maybe the 300EX would be all the more machine that he could handle.
Anways, lemmie know what you think...

Well a 250x is the same as a 300ex. So there would be no change. I'd go with what you suggested and get a 400ex, or a z400.

its not much more of a change, but if hes not an good rider than i wouldnt put him on a 400, the 300 has balls, just put a pipe on it & jet it when hes ready to get quicker.

a 250x has a shorter stroke, therefore being faster. The 300ex just has a crap load more bottom end. Tell him to get a stock 250r or 400ex. They both go for around the same price.

Theres no power difference, the 250x just revs a little bit higher.

A 250R ??? Are you serious? :huh I think maybe you mean a 250EX.
He can barely handle a 250X and the one time he rode my one friend's '06 450R he hit the gas too hard off the line and went off the back of the quad.
I dont think he could handle a 250R and he's not mechanically inclined enough to be able to handle the maintenance of a 2-stroke.

If the above is all true, then tell him to save all of his pennies, and just update the quad he has. A 400 of any brand is probably too much for him, and they ride different, so tell him to stick where he is. I am personally building a 250x/300ex monster right now, and I have had a 440ex. I liked the power of the 440 and the speed, but I can turn better lap times on a 300ex. BUT, to each their own.

I'd reccomend a 400ex, when he does upgrade.

Almost as bullet proof as the 300ex/250x. More power, but very predictable, and controlable power.

IMHO, a 400ex is actually easier to ride than a 300ex. Less need to manhandle the quad, and smother more consistent power throughout the rpm range. No need to downshift on large hills.

Also, if he's still running a stock pipe/filter swaping out those for a full system pipe (header and silencer), and an aftermarket filter (foam or gauze) will add a very noticable power gain/throttle response for the 250x.
