How does a mostly stock 250r compare to a 450r? Which one is faster? Im thinking of gettign a 250r and want to know some of the advantages and disadvantages of them.

Mostly stock, the 450r is faster and will be easier to ride. The 250r has the most potential for the money though.

Im thinking of getting a 250r or a 400ex. Will stock to stock 250r smoke a 400ex? And how much do you think i could get a good 250r for? Is 88 the only year they made the headlight into the plastic?

I would say that if you spend money on an R, then you should get one that you know is well kept, and that you know is going to be able to keep you happy for a long time to come...The thing about the R is that 20 years have been spent designing aftermarket parts to make it better. Why buy a near stock quad?

To be honest its not really a fair contest comparing a stock 20 year old R, to a modern 400ex.

Spend the extra and get a good well kept, mostly R. You will want to look in the 3200 range..

This is what I am talking about and its forsale by a member here.

How long have you been riding? What type of experience do you have with quads? The 4 strokes are a lot easier to ride than the 2. They are just much more forgiving. You can lug them around in a gear too high without killing it. You don't really need to feather the clutch. They are just all around easier to ride fast. That said, I ride my R about 10 times more than my 400 because once you get it figured out, they are about as good as it can get. Plus you can get a 250r that is pretty fast for about as much as a 400ex.

Stock to stock, a 250R will smash a 400EX. With a pipe, filter and reeds it will smash pretty much any 400EX you can throw at it, including bored ones.

I think the 89 has the integrated headlight like the 88, but if I'm not mistaken something was messed up on the 89 that made it not as good as the 88.

What was messed up , the fact that it was white and the list price was $1000 more than the "88". Other than that the were the same, except for maybe the tapered front spindles.

I thought the internal gearing was different? What is the year that had different gearing like that, if it wasn't the 89?

Better yet, does anybody have a list of differences from year to year, or a link with soemthing similar?

I know 1988-89 were the same. I think the higher 6th gear was just 1985-86 and maybe 87. The Baldwin billet gears are for 87-89 so I think it was just 1985-86.
