Ive been looking at the hotcam for the 400ex, how much of a increase in midrange and topend would i see from it? Is it even worth installing on a completely stock engine?
you are going to need a complete pipe to actually make some noticable gains and mabey increase to a 416 then the cams would be a great purchase

stage 1, 2, 3?????????????
I think the stage 1 is for stock bore motors and I think (not sure) stage 2 is for like a 416/426 and the stage 3 is for 440 and up don't hold me to my word that's just what I have been told.
it would not make a huge difference unless you bored over and haad a complete EXHAUST system...YOU REALLY DONT EVEN NEED THEM... THEY DONT DO THAT MUCH FOR YOU

all i have done to mine is HMF slip on and a uni filter.i put the stage 1 hotcam in it and jetted it and holy crap did it make a difference.well worth the 170.00 i payed for the cam!!
I'm not an expert but i've been here long enough to pick up a few things....
You don't need a full system and you don't need to bore the motor to feel the benifits of a cam but upping the compression will be more noticable.
Bore size wont make as much of a difference as a higher compression piston but many bore it anyway 'just because' the cylinder is out.
The stock header is supposed to be fairly decent, for a stock header.

a cam is One of the best performance gains u can buy and install with out going to a machine shop. because its a key part of the engine.
eventually iam going to get my baby apart adn dependig on what condition the cylender looks like iam probly ether gunna go with a 416 or just a std bore higher comp wisco and a stage one but... iam broke as always so all i can do is dream... any one wanna donate to my speed fund ?

You got any technical explanation or just an opinion, because a cam should make your motor bump pretty good.

On a 400EX, a cam with no further engine work will net usually 1-2 HP. A cam's function is more then adding power, it is a component that will allow you to get the engine to make power where you use or need it the most.
Example...
Stage 1 Hot cam...primarily a low end cam
Stage 2 Hot Cam...Mid-range
Stage 3..Top end
Technically it is alot more involved then this but in a nutshell, you will have to decide where you want your power and then make a decision based on the available cam's for your application.
So, is a cam needed on a stock engine? It can work well for those who want to change where thier engine makes power, but is best used in conjunction with a higher compression piston , free flowing exhaust, head porting and possibly even a larger carb.

So on a stock motor the cam made a big differance? I have been debating wether or not to do it, not sure if i want to do a piston just yet.

my stage one is awsome. A little wheelie happy but some gears will help to calm it down.
with my upgrades the cam made a stong differance.
A cam will make a difference even if you have nothing on your atv and just a stage 1 cam... however a high compression piston and a stage 1 cam will make a huge difference together... no bore is necessarily needed!
you may not need a bore kit but it makeds your atv perform much better

i just saw the magnum stage 2 cam on ebay for 90 bucks shipped, if i was to go with this and maybe a high compression piston, would it be noticeable. Im planning on maybe a slip on sometime or another to help the cam and piston breathe a lil more

i would get the full exhaust not slip on, i had my quad stock and the stage 1 made a noticable difference.

i have an HMF Slip-on, jetted, and K&N with no lid... I added a hotcam stage 1 and a wiseco 11:1 piston and a sparks flywheel key and it made a HUGE difference... Not saying i could go reace a 450r but It has so much bottom end now... I love it
