Tire Pressure

Hi,

My tires say maximum 10lb. What do most guys runs for tire pressure and what changes in handling as you raise or lower the air pressure?

I race cross country and run aroun 6 to 7 lbs of air in my tires... very much less and the back end feels loose and slides around and much more it gets stiff and rougher.
