Muffler Packing

I took apart the muffler on the R today to check the packing (Something I haven't even thought about since I got it...) and there wasn't any in there.

There were a few little pieces, but they were useless and all black.

So I ordered some new packing, and I was wondering wether it was safe to ride without it or if I should put something else in there temporarily.

I would just leave it til the packing arrived, but I am going riding this weekend at a quarry. The noise won't bother anyone, but I was wondering if it will harm the motor.... I'm pretty sure it won't, but I just need to be absolutely positive. The motor is too expensive to loose over 15 dollar silencer filler.

You're fine to ride without it. It's just there to help quiet the exhaust down.

BTW, losing packing over time is normal. I have to replace mine regularly (Sparks X6 exhaust) and keep several packages around the shop. It gets checked every time I change the oil.

I put some in today but it only helped minimally in the noise department, if at all. The packaging on it didn't specify whether it was for 2 stroke or 4, does it matter?

My favorite packing is M/T Pro Power Pack.

I used to always use regular old insulation to pack my big gun with on my 400. It works the same, and it actually seemed to last longer than the packing I would buy.

i just redid it on my 125 bike with fmf 2 stroke packing. Quieted it down quite a bit. Make sure you didnt pack it in too tight.

How often do you have to repack it? i have a new yosh full system on my R and have rode it prolly about 8 times with this pipe on?? and what happens if you don't repack it?

you should always keep packing in your exhaust. it may not be doing any damage but its robbing you of power.
