Ok, heres were im at... This is the third piston ive put in this quad (along with rings). And ive owned it for a little over a year, the last piston i bored it out one size over, put in a new crank and had the whole engine rebuilt. AGAIN, it is burning oil.... Anyway this could just be the valves, because my quad ticks loudly now with stock cam??? HOPEFULLY IT IS!! Because im freakin broke.

Are you making sure the ring gaps are opposite each other and not lined up?

Could be the valves but I doubt It..... by the way you explain this you have some water in your gas tank.... empty your gas buy a new spark plug... and see what it does

well, since i had the whole engine done.. and i cant do the bottom end myself (im only 14 :blah: ) i had my mechanic do it. But why would water in the tank make it burn oil??

You said it ticks real loud... Sometimes when it ticks your spark could be bad which is coused by water in the gas.... Burning oil could mean time for a new clutch.

Im really confused now, how the hell could my clutch make it burn oil

i dont know alot about 400exs....when i built up my kfx the ticking noise was due to the cam chain falling off..that may not help you but that was the problem with mine

I dunno about the clutch part, but the other part is somewhat true... You have to run a certain octane, and when you run to low of an octane you will hear a ping/ticking sound..

Well in my 400EX instruction manual it said when ur clutch is slippin that it will use up more oil to send to that area... just a suggestion. check the gas out though... empty the gas and refill it and clean the carb then a new spark plug and I think she'll run like a stallion...

Mines doing that too.... When I took the spark arrestor out I couldn't see it smoking, but when I put it back in it was smoking like no other..... I think I have the same problem as you, whatever it is cause mines only an 04' and its already doing this.

Well, so far he says... The ticking is my cam chain... its streached

The oil burning he says might be from my oil being to thin... i doubt it... but ill tell ya when its done

you can mostly here the ticking when your idling right? cuz mine goes away or i cant here it as i rev it up, but it is really noticeable when it is idleing.
