I have a 2000 400ex i with slip on k&n Curtis Sparks Key and a hot cam stage 2. I have heard of guys putting 450r carbs on a 400ex I was woundering what that does and what i would have to do to put one on my quad thanx guys.

i would suggest changing cams, and/or boring and upping the compression if you're going tokeep the stage 2 cam, its quite a bit of cam for a stcok bore and compression, stage 1's work nicely

as for your question 450r carbs do wonders stock and upgraded 400ex! definately the easiest carb upgrade, edlebrocks and fcr's can be better but at a steep price and a huge amount of fiddling to put out an extra 1 hp is just not worth it to me, then again im lazy :)

As far as what you would have to do to put the 450r carb on... Of course, get the 450r throttle cable. On the intake boots, both sides of the carb, you would need to sand some of the rubber out. Remove the factory 450r choke lever. If you can make one work, good for you, but mine I have never needed. Even in the coldest situations. Pump the throttle a couple times and start her up! Problem with the choke lever, it may not look like it is in the way when you put the carb on, but it will rub a hole in your gas line if not removed. Happened to me twice before I wisend up and took it off. Hope that helps. Goodluck.

Go to the 400ex section of this site and you'll find lots of info on this subject.

I just wrote a how to install on the 450R carb. Click this to read it.

Personnaly, I don't recommand this carb with a stock bore and no porting. I have slip-on, welded herder, cam, filter, no lid and my 450r carb work but didn'nt run fine.... To me, the accel pump is too big for a small 400cc and the Idle is difficult to find because the circuit are too big for a little 400cc.... But I have a noticable gain of hp at WOT...

So, I must do a P&P in mine!:D :D (good reason!!!):D

I have a uni filter, maybe a K&N can solve my problem (bring more air and help...) My jetting is rigt when my engine is cold... when he's hot, too rich.... I try everything and no good result for the pilot circuit. IT's my major problem....

So, It's up to you...

I have a Ported head, cam and Piston in mine. It idles better and starts much easier now with the new carb on there. 42 mm is a pretty dam big carb for a 400ex.

Lol, go big then! Stroke it! I honestly love it on my 460. Even better than the 41mm FCR I used to have... The 42mm 450r carb is a more all around use carb than the 41mm FCR.
