I currently have a 400ex.. mainly all i do is trail ride/ramp/hillclimb.. im wanting the 450 for more bottom end for hill climbs... im worried about some hills i wont make and trashing my 06 400.. does the 450r have a tremendous amount of more low end torque, or not? Considering saving some money and trading in for the 450... just wanna get some opinions on this.

I think the only hills you won't make it up with a 400ex is giant sand hills like cherry choke in little sahahra. Put it in second and hold her wide upen:macho

i dont know about exactly how the 450r is but i can tell you that ive tried out the yamaha 450 and its pretty nuts. Ive heard that the 450r has more bottom tho. all i can tell you is that they are fast fourwheelers and are pretty nuts for a 450. Ive tried out the ds 650 baja and the 450 i find has more bottom end. Ive also tried a banshee and i feel that the 450 is pretty close to the shee also. I say if your happy with you ex then keep it. or just try out a 450r if possible and then take it from there.

well most of the hills im talking about are back in woods.. which are prolly where most steep are.. next would be a giant hill on side of the highway.. which is rock.. ide say i can make it.. jsut aint got the balls..lol.. and the others are some good sized step ups in sand.. i can make all those tho.. i just rode yfz450 and 450r and i want the power

you could always mess with your gearing if your concerned about not making it up hills, but mine is stock and i have no problem...but everybody from my group, (even my dad,) calls me an idiot cuz some of the **** i will do and hills i will climb on my '99 400. its really a personal choice. you would be out some $$$$ if you traded it in though.

ive got a 400ex and my buddy has the 450r. that 450r is one bad *** bike. i would any day of the week take the 450 over the 400.

i put a high comp piston and hotcam stage 1 and sparks key in my 400 and it has a ton of bottom end... the 450's i have ridden dont have nearly as much bottom end, but they have a ton of mid to high range power... i would do the cam and piston to get you some more power to work with, then mess with your gearing

ill give ya the best review on this situation i have had many quads within the past 5 years, two yfz one 450r and now a 400ex.... all quads are fast enough and have enough power to get through anything as well any hills i want to climb no problems at al.. the yfz and 450r both rev quicker and have some power to back it up given, but imo the yfz and 450r have a stiff ride, but thats how they are made for the mx track etc.... when i got the 400ex was because i didnt want to spend a lot again on a new quad, and after having it for 4 months now i am glad i went with it, reverse, smooth ride, to me it feels it has a softer ride too, just matters what you like though, another big thing is gas consumption because i know this 400ex uses way less gas than any of the others i have had.

hope that helps ya

the new 06 450r are much faster then the 05 450r. you WILL NOT make your 400 as fast as the new 450. if you are seriously into hill climbs, get the 450

You can make almost any hill on the 400 but if you are thinking you want a bigger/better bike you will never be happy with the 400.Get the 450 if you can.

why would you want a 400 over a 450? 450's have the power and the stock suspenison is much better then the stock 400's... you can make your 400 as good as a 450 but with pocket full of cash...DEEP pocket

Ya instead of buying a new 450 I would consider what he said, or a dif. sprocket..... I've seen both a YFZ and 450R climb a crazy hill and make it up, then a 400ex try and not even get close..... I'm sure its rider ability to, but they just ripped up it.

only problem with the new 450's is LACK OF TORQUE..lol i like em but they dont have nearly as much torque as my race quad..thats the only problem..i mean sure a built 450r is faster..but it lacks the torque of the ol stroker ex...:bandit:
