I've been toying with the idea of swapping out the 400ex motor in my sig with a different one...not sure which though.

What do all the experts say about this. I know there is a yz400, 426 and a few others. I love how my quad rides and handles so I really don't want to start all over with new parts on a newer machine. The 400ex has great frame geometry and is a great motor but face it, it's a dinosaur and desperatly wants to be water-cooled. That's why you can't get a real significant power increase without the possiblilty of grenading the motor.

What's a good motor to swap without is being a real pain in the *** or too expensive?

Thanks

Glamis

the engine off of a xr650 will fit right into your stock chasis. if you get the electric start engine i think it is called the xr650l motor you don't have to wory about the huge kick starter. the engine looks so close to the 400 ex stock engine it could pass off as one easily. do a search for it. i know one was done last year on here with some great pics. the only thing that really had to be fabbed up was teh exhaust header which is pretty easy. aside from moving your enigne mounts, which i think i remember they used the stock ones, should be a close fit.

interesting... Will a honda 450 motor slide in without too much hassle?

to much fab work, not enough gain to justify doing it. in my opinion.

OK, thanks for your time. I'm just looking for more performance without starting all over buying a whole new quad.

the 650 r motor is 60 horse stock. uncork it and wow. besides i'm more interested in the torque the motor makes. night and day difference.

yz 400/426 motors are the best most relible motor to put in a 400ex.

the crf450 motor fits and makes more power but needs more maintnence.

also i dont know for sure but a ktm 450sx motor would be a good motor.

if the motor is any bigger than stock it wll be a pain in the *** to get it mounted in. it takes a little work just to get a 400ex motor in and out. now a bigger motor would be a pain.

theirs a guy on here that makes frame kit that mounts the yamaha motors in to your quad for a cheep $260.

if you get a mounting kit from a shop it will cost you $1000 + parts
