is it very common for the 400ex valves to wear out?

no they will last a long time. they need adjusting though. like once a year.

more like once a month or every oil change is good too.

only if you run them loose. like i have. after putting in my stage one hotcam i didnt check the valves before i started it. stupid i know. but i dont think it hurt them.
