What was Honda's reason for stopping production of the 250R? I thought originally that it was for enviromental reasons, but why then did they keep making two stroke bikes?

lawsuits.

It wasn't necessarily the 2-stroke motor that was the problem. People thought that 4-wheelers were "safer" than motorcycles because they felt more stable.

Unfortunately, an accident can be just as deadly at 40mph, regardless if it's 2-wheels, 3-wheels, or 4-wheels.

So everybody got them, didn't take the time to learn them properly, let their kids ride them, and people got hurt. Huge lawsuits were filed, they banned 3-wheelers altogether in 1986. They still made production 4-wheelers for a few more years, but Honda and Suzuki both cut those off as well. Only Yamaha kept building, but only the same tired old designs. Nobody came out with new designs until Honda released the 400EX 10 years later.

A little bit of what everybody here said, but what it all boiled down to was Honda not wanting to have a bad name and have that effect sales of their cars, which is where they make the bulk of their money.
