How reliable are 440's? what are signs to watch out for, and do they have heating issues, if so how would you fix it?

If you get a 440ex kit, what other things have to be done to the engine?

You will want HD head studs, and possibly a HD connecting rod. You can expect to replace the stock cultch fairly soon depending on how hard you ride it. You hear of heating issues with them but if you run the correct fuel you should be ok. Im sure I've left some stuff out...

I have to add here. I own one of the first 400EX's released in California in 1999. I have had the same IMS 440 kit since it was 2 months old. Just reringed it last season since I was doing other performance upgrades. All I can say is if you SERVICE it on a regular basis it will give you years of enjoyment. I am running 11.9 comp, stock rod and crank, Web cam , Eichner carb, port work, Jardine pipe, etc. Two weeks ago was at Glamis and raced a piped, camed, carbed 06 TRX450 and put 3 bike lenghts on him at Olds and at the drags. The guy was pi--ed. So much he wanted to buy my quad. So , I say do it and you want be dissapointed. By the way, My wife now rides this quad as I purchased a new LT-R450. In stock form she will beat me but not for long. Good luck.
