You could either be losing it out one of your drain plugs, or the motor is burning it. If so, then you will need to rebuild the engine. Valve guides could be worn, or the piston rings could be worn. Either way you would need a freshen up.

Thats what mines doing, after every ride I put about a quart in it... If you can't see it smoking, but your hand behind your pipe and blip the throttle.... When I do that I can see oil on my hand.

Same cause I don't wanna rebuild it so soon.

Yeah i was thinking that, but if i do rebuild it would be a good time to put in a bigger or high compression piston. Im going to look into it and see why its doing this

What year is it?

Yeah the engine is completely stock, and its an 03
Like im not sure if its a big problem , do most 400ex or any other 4 stroke quads burn up oil like that

and thanks

Not if the rings are in good shape, you most likely needs rings ;)
You need to take off the top end an inspect it well and if your not sure how, get with someone who does .

If you put alot of miles or hard riding, its good to check them- after a series is when I do mine.I have only had to re-ring mine once this year . Ill be replacing my Piston completly with new next time around.

You have an oil ring that specifically keeps this from happening, when the ring wear out, you start burning oil.

If your LOSING oil and your NOT leaking oil.....then its most likely the rings. Its not vavle related Im pretty sure .If your Vavles were out of whack, you would be doing more than buring oil!!! :)

Trust me ...THEY ARE worn out .. ;)
this is a cheap fix

Ya mines an 04', and i'm already having problems with it..... We took the head off, to drill out my spark plug ( Long story) and after we put it back together it started messing up..... But just yesterday I started out riding with a lil over fill mark on dipstick, rode for about 3.5 hours, checked it today and got none, screwed it in and had about .25 of an inch in there... But I can see it on my hand out of the exhaust, so what your saying is all I need is new piston rings pretty much???

i dont kno where mine leaks from but there is always a bit of oil around the head gasket only on the front of the motor. all the bolts are tight. i dunno why it started to leak but it does now.

You drilled the spark plug??!!!

Ok...Why and how did you fix it?? You have NO OIL coming out of that?? OR ANY part of the Motor??
Thats ALOT of oil to lose

You can also burn oil if you have bad vavle seal's, oil in the topend, leaks though the valves causing oil to burn.

Ya my spark plug was stuck in it, we couldn't get it out at all, so my dad tried and it just snapped right off.. But we took it to a machine shop and they drilled it out and rethreaded it.. So we put it back together, checking everything... I noticed I was smoking by the exhaust pipes for a week or so, then that stopped... I don't know what else it would be if it isn't the piston rings, but when we took it all off we didn't mess with the piston.. Is it valves, cam not timed, what else could it be???
