View Full Version : 2006 GNCC "Steele Creek" Round #3 Live ATV Race Coverage

Morganton, NC - After a two week break from back to back races in Florida and Georgia, the GNCC Series heads to the North Carolina mountains for Round #3 at Steele Creek Campground. This location is one of the most scenic on the tour with it nestled in the valley surrounded by mountains, and with the mountains, the track will contain plenty of elevation changes and a few technical hill climbs along with some water crossings and mud pits in the valley, which attracts thousands of spectators to watch.

After racing in the south the past two rounds, it was a rude awaken for those use to the warm weather because with temps only barely above 50 degrees for highs with lows near freezing coupled with a brisk wind and rain showers, it is going to be a raw weekend for racing, which is reminiscent to last year.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:08 PM
With the temps set to drop down below freezing tonight along with the possibility of some snow showers, it seemed as if everyone was building a burning pit for a camp fire tonight.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:11 PM
The Racer Production was busy finalizing the track, which will run the opposite direction of last year, and the racers will go under the bridge and then up over a small bank and drop into one of nasty mud pits.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:14 PM
From this photo, the mud pit may not seem that bad, but by the end of the day tomorrow, there will be some deep ruts and some stuck ATVs with a huge crowd of spectators gathered around to just watch the action unfold.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:17 PM
The race will zig zag back and forth across the river on small bridges, which become extremely slick, which have caused some riders to slide right off into the water in the past especially if it rains or snows overnight.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:19 PM
Regardless, riders better plan on getting a little wet because for one crossing there isn't a bridge, which will require riding through the water or going over 300 feet out of your way to avoid the water, so I will surely be keeping an eye on this section at the beginning of each race tomorrow.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:26 PM
Once Again, the registration line was very active, which shows signs that this might be another record weekend for ATV attendance

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:28 PM
This rider with the shades was in line to signup to race in the 35+ C Class, and he was also celebrating his 42nd Birthday.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:30 PM
With the possibility of mud, new tires were on list of things to do before the race on Saturday, and it is great to have friends along to help carry the tires

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:31 PM
The guys at Maxxis were definitely prepared as they had piles up tires ready for their support riders.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:33 PM
The Tire Balls crew were kept busy with stacks of tires waiting to be changed or freshly mounted with Tire Balls.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:36 PM
Elka's Support Rig was setup early, and Elka's Ethan was busy trying to help Mr. Wilson with one of his riders shocks as Elka offers track side support for anyone racing Elka Suspension in the GNCC & ATVA MX Nationals.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:43 PM
Todd Swain made the trip down from PA with his son, so the pair of them can spend the weekend together and race. It will be very obvious to find his son on the track with those yellow tires.

Admin
03-24-2006, 07:46 PM
The Stracham sisters are hoping for some better luck this weekend than in Georgia, and Jesi will be running a brand new set of pink Maier fenders this weekend, which will make it easy to pick out from the rest of the youth racers.

Admin
03-24-2006, 08:31 PM
Before I knew it, the sun disappeared behind the trees and it was time to relax and prepare for the a day of racing on Saturday. The Hellyer family were one of many families gathered around a camp fire, and they will be up bright and early for the Youth ATV Race.

Just like the Hellyer family, I am calling it a night to rest up for a busy day tomorrow, and live updates from the track will be posted throughout day along with race results.

Once again Walker Fowler takes first overall in the youth race followed by Cheyne Gravely and Brandon Boso (limited class).

Santo Derisi will not be racing this weekend. He got hurt last weekend at a Mid East race and still has some internal bleeding. Hope you heal up fast Santo.

Angel Atwell the early leader .Traci Cecco has now taken over the lead after Angel Atwell got hungup and allowed the pass. Major bottlenecks everywhere. Mike Penland and Brock Parker both got hungup behind stuck riders in some of these bottlenecks.

At one point early in the race Fulkerson pulled over to help Cecco who was under her quad. Lap traffic was a huge factor today.

Johnny & Monica

Angel Atwell got stuck on a hill which allowed Traci Cecco to take first.

The front width of a stock ltr450 is 47 and a half inches. I know a lot of trx 450 with plus 1 inch a arms that are 47 and a half inches. The issue with the ltr450 is the rear being a lil over 49 in the rear. I know a modified z400 hub will put the ltr450's rear in at about 47 inches so that would solve the problem with width.

I talked to J. Rice. His LT-R is stock with 4+1 front wheels and LTZ Hubs. It measures 48" wide this way, and it's still too wide he says - but he's racing it that way. Everyone's still waiting for A arms, they're hands are tied.

"Actuallly the zuki doesnt come with 4 by 1's but the hipers are a little wider so my quad measures 47 and 1/2 inches in the front. The rear is the same as my 450r because we did some modifying. Only completed one lap do to technical difficulties!"

Doesn't seem to be working too bad for Todd Rothermel. Two firsts and a second (4str Stock A/B).

I had a Great TIME... i luved the Track, I luved the Weather... Snow on the start line was AWESOME..... :D

But i did run one of my better races but you just cant give people a 1 turn headstart at the begining of a GNCC cause that makes for a tough day of catch up especially when you start in the back of the pack of the OPEN B Class you will get into some C Class Bottle Necks..... :grr:

But i had to say it was a GREAT TRack.... and im not a hill climber by anymeans but DAMN I LUVED THE HILLS TOO..... ;) :macho
