the stock gearing is 15/38 on your bike i believe. the taller rear tires should in theory make you bike "faster" but it won't be quicker. i would personally put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it to gain some of your torque back.

Ya personally I would go with the 14 to, but to make it a lil faster on top end you can go to a 16 front.

You have a 10 tooth front sprocket :eek2: Holy sh*t that thing has to have some torque but what's your top speed, like 40?

If you're running 22's on back, you could go down to 14 tooth front. From '99-'04, 400EX's came stock with a 15/38 setup. Top speed is around 65mph. A smaller front will aid in torque, but you'll lose about 7-8mph. Going to a larger sprocket (ex. 16) will give you more top end but result in a slower launch.

It all depends on your riding conditions. Some trails ask for high-speed gearing (16/38), where slower riding like sand dunes are better suited for a 13 or 14/38 gearing.

i did the same with my 2005. 22 inch bear klaws. mine came stock with a 14 tooth sprocket up front. with the 14 it had no bottom end torque. i dropped to a 13 and it helped out a little bit but it was nearly the same. but it will go through almost anything. bear klaws are excellent tires. If I was you I would get a 14 and if that doesnt give it what you want try out a 13.

Good Luck:)

As for sprocket and chain brands, I just buy the cheapest things i can find... Ive never had a chain snap or a sprocket break. And i ride HARD. :macho
