Hey guys, a riding/racing buddy of mine isn't comfortable with his thumb throttle on his 06 450R. This past Saturday he was at the track in Walnut, IL and told me his thumb would cramp up after about 1-2 laps. He said its only really bad when he turns right. He was wondering if it was possible to put the 04-05 assembly on it. I don't think it will work myself with the way the TPS is in the assembly itself. What do you guys think he should do?

Thanks

keep practicing and get the thumb in shape. I don't see why the 04-05 assembly wouldn't work. The problem may be in the different carb they used on the 06 model.

what above said! I have heard of people loosening the housing SLIGHTLY so it can be moved to a different position. i.e. your hand or thumb starts to cramp and you rotate the housing foward or back to get a new position. I have never done this so I cant say if it helps or not

I have heard of other people changing to a 400 throttle assembly and cutting the spring on the side of the carb. It is a bigger issue on the yfz than the 450r, but I have heard of several people being unhappy with it, I think it just goes along with the fcr carb. Do a little searching and you should be able to find some posts about it.

yes, i race x/c and have a prob with the throttle ergonomics also.
i recenly ordered an 05 400ex throttle assembly myself with an trx 90 lever. you have to order the whole thing in pieces, each piece has a part #. i odered the trx 90 lever instead of the 400 ex. you can also call quad salvage yards until you can find one in whole and then just order the trx 90 lever. i did this on my yfz 450 and it helped some. to do this you have to cut and splice the t.o.r.s. wires together, wich will eliminate your tors from working.
i cut and spliced mine about 3 inches from the plug under the hood, just be careful to follow the wires from the throttle down to under the hood. be sure and splice them together, or your quad will not run past idle speed in gear.
i have not raced this set up yet, but it just feels better than it did with my thumb on the new throttle.
if that don't work, i also ordered a new twist throttle for it!!! if you have any probs. understanding what im talking about call me at 501-952-6487

i would try moving it back or forward, i did this on mine until i got it to where i liked it, other then that there really isnt much you can do but change throttle assemblys or get a new thumb throttle lever

the TRX 90 thumb lever will work on the 06 but you will need to do some machining. when you mill the flats back on you can change how far in/out the thumb lever is

i also was having trouble w/ stock 06 thumb. switched to a moose throttle but lever shape was diff after being used to a 400ex throttle.

i just put a 05 450r thumb throttle on, and all is back to normal. rode all day sat on a new track in georgia. 3.2 miles per lap, my thumb was fine and no more arm pump or cramps.

i think u can use a throttle from- 250ex, 300ex, 400ex, they all look the same.

just disconnect the tps wires and solder them together.

I could not stand the 06 thumb throttle either. I was thumb cramping within 10 minutes.
I put a twister on mine and cut and spliced wires like the others have posted.
I used the info on GT Thunders website for cutting the wires.

Well guys thanks for you input. My buddy said he ordered an 05 lever. He says the 05 has a curve or bend to it. So hopefully that helps him out. If not we'll look into your suggestions.

Also if you cut the TPS wires won't that hurt the performance?

As stated in a previous post leave the mount just loose enough that you can rotate it up and down while riding. That does seem to help some.
