how much performance would i lose if my valves were mis-adjusted?

I wouldnt worry about performance, try trashing your top end.

I would just keep them adjusted, mine wernt adjusted and they got tight and ripped the valve from the valve stem, destroying my piston and head.

They will tick loudly if its not ticking already. It can't do any good either. I believe it wares (sp? weird word.) down the cam and rocker arms also.

i check my valvue clearance on my 250x and they were way off. after i adjusted them it started better and ran better. didnt back fire anymore either.
