I'm putting a new cam and rocker arms in the ole 300ex. This is really my first time digging into a 4-stroke motor. What things do I need to do as far as timing etc? Does it matter the exact point I put the cam gear on the chain?

Yes, the cam sprocket has to be timed. If your one tooth off on either side the valve timing will be off and if won't run correctly (if at all).

Get a service manual--but the short of it is that the dashes on the cam sprocket should line up straight across with the top of the head with the engine at TDC.

It's lined up very very close, so close that it seems as if I were to move it on tooth the other way it would be way off. I guess I'll have to give it a try.
