I went to little sahara just this weekend. Got to ride friday for alil while, then came home saturday because the rain wasn't letting up. Well anyways even with my quad hopped up it still kinna sucks in the sand. I went up all them tall dunes and stuff, but it just seems the whole time it never started pulling hard like it usually does on dirt. On dirt the front end wants to come up on me sometimes. Now on sand i better have my *** dragging the sand to get it to lift the front. I think its my jetting though. It started running really crappy when it got hot after about 30-45 minutes of riding. Normal hot really but it just starts to run like crap. what do ya'll think the problem is?

Are you running paddle tires? Also what mods do you have? 300EX's suck in sand too under powered. I have a 97 model and in the sand I hate riding it.

Yea i'm running 20in kenda trakkers. I might need to put my 13T sprocket up front next time, and buy a 12 tooth incase i wanna try that, i have a 14T right now. My mods are in my signature.

i done dune (wish I could, but I live in Philly? :( ) but I have heard that you should only use 6 paddle tires for a 300ex. If you put that 13t front on, you will get your bottom end back.

Anyways, a 300ex probably isn't going to be the best in the sand unless it has some decent engine work and is tuned correctly. Stay on top of your jetting..

sand robs power, sounds like your about ready for a step up to the next size quad. the 300ex was never meant to be a dune carver its a great trail quad for the woods and power is very respectable for a beginner quad but sounds like for the money you could get a 400ex for what you sank into the 300. if your just in love with the 300 you can try a 12:1 wiseco and cam, also the dg isnt the best pipe. try a big gun or white bro's and drop a tooth in front. if your friends are on 400's or 450's you wont be happy until you get a bigger ride.

You don't think i have 450r shocks on it huh. lol j/k. If i had a digital camera i could do it now. When i get my truck fixed i'll get a disposable camera and get it put on a cd so i can show ya'll. it looks sick with them 450r shocks.

Yea for sure sand robs power. Yea i really like how i have my quad and thats what i want a quad to be like. next time i rebuilt i'm thinking about the 350x conversion and sending the motor off to FST to install the 452cc kit. i'll be carving the dunes then.

Maybe i can buff off a couple paddles on each tire. That would add to my custom look also, but would it really make a difference. It might make me be able to spin the tires faster in higher gears.

You can change 2 things to help out your 300 in the sand.

That 14 tooth front is way too big. You'll want a 13 or even the 12 in the sand. 13 should be ok with 20's.

The sand tires you have are killing you. Look into a set of Skat-Trak Gliders (6 paddle) on an 8x8 rim.

To late to change sand tires. i was looking on here and it said kenda trakkars would be a good choice for my bike. do you think i can buff a couple paddles off each tire to make them spin better.

The trakkers are ok. They jsut weigh more than the skat-traks do.

I prefer a straight paddle to the v-paddle on the 300ex. V-paddles help you powerslide, but they eat a lot of power.

Next time i get some paddles i'll try the straight paddle design. Before i buff a couple paddles off will it benefit me any.

Haven't tried it so I couldn't tell you. I only go to Little Sahara 2-3 times a year.. so I'm not a dune expert by FAR, but I know exactly where you are coming from with the loss of power in the sand. I used to run stock gearing w/ Sand Sharks on them.. when I had the standard pipe/filter combo. They sucked the life out of my 300.. lol.

Using a hotwire grooving tool to trim down the paddles a little may help.. but again I haven't done that.. so who knows.

I'm sure some of our local sand experts can be a lot more help than I can.

I wouldnt buff off any of the paddles, you can get a used set that are wore down about half way for real cheap, thats what I run on a old 250x that my kids ride it lets you make more tire speed.

What do ya think will happen if i buff them off.

450rJam

well unless you buff a little off each one it will at the very least be out of ballance and vibrate at high tire speeds, if you have a 8 paddle and want to turn it to a 6 then which two you going to buff? one on opposite sides ? then each time it hits the slick spot i think it would jerk a little or kind of pulse. I have never heard of anyone trying it, so if you do post the outcome. you can always hit the blacktop and do a few burnouts and wear them down lol take video of that also.

You know them outcomes are for sure possible, And if i had a video camera i could video tape all kinds of things i do. Yea i was gonna buff them off on opposite sides. There is alot of slick spot in between the paddles if i did that. I'm WFO almost all the time at lil sahara, so i don't think that pulsing thing will happen at high speeds, but i'm worried about the vibration things your talking about.

I know what you mean about wide open all the time. I adjusted the thumb throttle straight up so when it was wide open it was in a comfortable postion.
