HRC is probably the best bet from what i hear. its a drop in cam from honda so you dont have to replace anything else

It's also very expensive.

HRC is by far the best.

I've had a Hot Cams Stage 2 in my 400 for a couple years. It is a great cam. No problem installing it, and I've never had any problems with it, nor has it caused any problems. Before that I had the xr cam. It was better than stock, but not as good as the stage 2. I've only heard good things about HRC cams, I chose not to install that because the price was so high.

Hotcams is also a drop in cam, for half the price of the HRC. You have to remove the decompression lever but you never notice a difference without it. You dont have to replace anything else with the hotcams either by the way.

I got mine from GT Thunder.

I've ran the XR400 cam and stage 2 hot cam and the HRC is a better cam but cost twice as much...:eek2:

Let me give you the extended answer.

The 400EX is based off the XR400 dirtbike engine. Honda beefed up the gears, changed the port size a bit, a few other changes, but it's basically the same engine. Many parts are interchangable, including the camshaft. Although the XR400 camshaft has different specs than the 400EX cam, the basic size, shape, bolts holes, and sprocket are all identical.

Honda doesn't actually make an HRC cam for the 400EX. But they DO make one for the XR400. That's what you should be looking for, the HRC cam for the XR400. It will drop right into the 400EX.

if you search, you will find the parn number for the HRC cam that you can type in at service honda or give to your local shop.
