My ex has up and down play in it.If I pull up on the bars when standing on the pegs it has like 1/4 inch of up and down to it.I checked it and the nut is tight.I tried using washers directly under the nut to no avail. Is this normal??I can feel it when I am riding.Any input on a fix would be great. Its not crucial but its annoying.:blah:

quite possibly a worn out stem bearing. ive seen some of them so bad that they literally fall aprt when removed. with the up and down play, its either loose or the bearing is worn.

I agree with Pappy on this one, the bearing is most likely worn out, i had the same problem with mine when i first got it because i didnt even know there was a bearing there...

Mine was soo bad that it fell to bits when taken out. other than that it might just be a "duh" thing like the mounting bolts are loose on the handle bars.

Why do the "duh" things always have to cost the least ??

I was just wondering though, are there dust seals for that bearing??

you might check the snap ring that should be holding the bearing in place too!

I just went through this 1 week ago. I had a lot of up and down play in my steering stem. I replaced the bearing and 2 seals. 100% fixed. I guarantee you need a new bearing and 2 seals. 30 minute job. The bearing will pound out from the bottom up towards the handlebards. Be sure to remove the snap ring.

If you didnt put in the thick washer that slides in the seal, under the nut you will have up and down slop.

#5 on the picture.

I'd make it a yearly replacement item, I replaced everything last year, pulled my stem out just 2 weeks ago and the bearing was broke in 3 pieces- thats just after 10 races.
