Ok, I got an 04' 400ex, and I think it may be burning oil. My question is how do I know for sure? I've looked at the smoke coming out, and I don't see blue smoke. I've also looked all around to see if it was leaking and I can't see any. I know I must be burning it or something, because each time before I go riding I have to put about half a quart in. So anyone got any ideas on where else I should check?

do what he said . i could put my hand behind the pipe and rev it up and see oil on my hand. if your loosing half a quart thats not good. get that thing rebuilt before you run it too low and get more serious damage.

All 400's use oil when ran hard, but not that much. HAve someone ride beside you, and watch. It will probably smoke when you let off from high rpm if the rings are bad. Also, check the level of the oil in the crankcase. It should be level with the b0olt in the side when you take it out. If you rock the bike slightly, it will drip out. It is a small 10mm bolt. One ride, my oil showed up low, but the crank level was way high. Hasn't happened since.

go fast in 3rd gear and when its time to up shift down to 2nd instead and roll and look behind. if its burning oil then you chould see it then by doing that.
