Nice man, the 454 is a SERIOUS engine! Too bad is all detuned and corked up from the factory :ermm: What is it, like 255 hp/400 ft lbs of torque from the factory right? It's like the Dodge 5.9, has good potential for power, but produces measly numbers for its size from the factory. Get some headers and an intake on that thing ASAP, should really wake it up some. That motor has really good potential for power, it's all hiding in there somewhere, just need to unleash it lol.

ya man the factory 454's suck, but with some headers, intake, and some new pulleys it'll really wake up. a new TB and a set of heads would make that thing a monster tho

mmhm :macho

Hell even if you got some aluminum heads for it and throw either a comp or lunati cam in her, throw some high comp pistons, roller rockers etc it'd wake up in a heart beat.

exactly, either been rebadged or swapped in. and in the early 90's , 1990-1993 to be exact, the only way to get a big block in a 1500 was the 454ss trucks.

I take it there's not smog inspections out there...did you get a computer out of a 3/4 ton truck?...what year is the motor? What did it take to make that 454 fit? did you do up custom motor mounts? i believe all the mounts are different between a big block and small block. got any pics of the engine bay?

huntr08
03-16-2006, 01:26 PM
no i dont have n e pics of it, i had it done in a body shop i guess, i bought the computer off of a guy the engine had less than 25000 miles on it and he totaled his 3/4 so thats how i got it.

but what year is it? If its anything 96 and newer theres no such thing as putting chip in the computer. The chips arent removable and the computer needs to be programmed with a hand held programmer like a hypertech. And you had a body shop do a motor swap for you?...most body shops around here i wouldnt let touch anything motor wise in my vehicle....i have a friend looking to upgrade motors in his 95 and a 454 would be nice upgrade for his truck..i'd like to see the motormount setup they used.

take off the body lift and put a 6inch lift on it and some 37" tires and some 18" rims , that would be sick with that 454

that is waht he was just talking about. he said he had the 454 put in out of a totaled 3/4 ton truck. Read ALL of the post first. i mentioned the fact that 1/2 tons only came with the 454 for 3 years already.:macho

heres the whole entire scoop on my pickup, i bought it from my brother who got a 2004 chevy, i got the pickup blew up my 350 5.7 i went to a guy that owns a body shop and has two large buildings full of engines, i asked him if he had a 454 with reasonable miles on it, he looked thru his inventory on his computer came across this 1996 engine that had 24056 miles on it and said that the computer had a chip in it (that was on the inventory) and the engine had came out of a totaled 3/4 that was sitting on his lot in the junkyard, we went out and looked at it i agreed to buy it for 1700, i took it to another body shop who the guy that owns and operates the place is a liscensed gm technician/mechanic i asked him if he could get it dropped in for me, he told me no problem, i told him just do what he has to do to get it to fit he said he had to fix the mounting brackets on it. i got it back and it ran fine. i dont have any pics, i would have to get my moms camera and then bring the pics here to school and upload and then post here on the internet. i hope this clears alot up for everyone

the reason y i dropped it in is because i work on a ranch and own cattle, i needed a bigger engine than a 350 to pull my cattle and my horses, i work in an area where there is alot of clay hills and i did not have enough torque to pull up the large canyon hills

even if you do need the extra power the 4L60E cant hold up to that kind of loading and torque. Honestly for 95% of towing situations the 5.7 should be more than enough if you dont drive it like dukes of hazzard. I mean its got great torque numbers for a 1/2 ton pickup. That L60E will burn up like its going outta style in that truck with a BB in front of it. I would deff upgrade to a L80E with a elec/switchable overdrive in it if your doing serious towing.

Honestly for heavy towing a 3/4 or 1 ton would do much better along with a diesel. The new duramax's specs are INSANE on power!

diesel trucks are nice but prolly like some of us, he cant afford 600$ bucks a month payment, insurance, diesel is 2.59 here. just isnt smart.

You're exactly right! the 350 is enough. tranny is all worries.
i know from experience. i too have a 97 ext chevy 350 vortec 4L60E. 163k miles engine has more than you can ask for but you'd be right if you guessed it was on its 3rd tranny.

^^^LOL thats what i was thinkin and to answer his ? about the dash that was where the head lamp controls were and my bro took em out b4 he sold it to me. and i pry woulda had enuff but my dad had a 454 in his old pickup b4 upgrading to his new 496 8.1 chevy heavy duty, and he was the one that told me if i wanted to continue with the hauling i would have to get a bigger engine. and it just got a new tranny in it about a yr ago. and diesel over here is about 2.69 so diesel is expensive
