View Full Version : Rev Box or Bigger Sprocket?

My 400ex seems like it's hitting the rev-limiter too quick. I can go into a corner, drop a gear, and come out, but before I can get it straighted out and grab another gear it starts cutting out (I'm guessing it's hitting the redline?). And if I don't downshift, it lugs out of the corner and I have to feather the clutch, which was OK on my 250R, but I hear it isn't great on a four stroke. So can I put a box on it and give it a little more time before I have to shift, or do I need a gearing change? Or do I need to quit whining and learn how to ride a four stroke like I did my 250R? Thanks.

Try a gearing change first. You'll have to experiment with this, no one is going to be able to tell you what sprockets to use, and it will also depend on the track and how tight and technical it is.

the rev box will increase the red line and let you ride it out a LITTLE further.

Well you say it happens when you are coming out of a corner, but in a higher gear it lugs, i would gear it down and maybe it won't lug in the higher gear.

Cheaper to play with a couple front sprockets see if that helps.

Then maybe try a cdi box. I do like the aftermarket cdi boxes, I ride my 4 stroke in the upper rpms alot.

you will like the cdi box but is about 6 times more than a $15 sproket
