I Have a dirt bike that i ride just as much as my quad and putting a twist throttle on my quad made switching between the two easy. personally i prefer twist throttle its hard to get used to thumb after using twist for 10 years. I think its all personal preference, but imo go with the twist!

If you decide to go with the twist, I have a complete twist throttle with the cable i can get rid of. It's in perfect shape w/ renthal grip.

I would never get a twist. you could try it and see how you like it. i have and there is no way i could ever get used to it.

well I can tell you what I think of it in about a week..mine should be coming in in like 2 days, I gotta put it on, finish up some jetting, and then I'll take it out. ;)

i rode my friends yz125, (first time on a twist) and that thing scared the crap outta me, i felt like i had no control. i would try to turn, and accidentally twist the throttle and it just about threw me off

just takes time to get used to. I'll prob have no problem with mine because I ride dirtbikes too.

thats exactly what im scared of, this thing ive got now is a monster. I guess ill just keep teh thumb throttle and just keep moving it around until i get it to a comfortable position. Anyone got any advice , or is it really all rider preference.

You're asking for trouble with a twist throttle. Keep riding, your thumb will get used to it. If you twist your throttle upward slightly it will help with fatigue also.;)

it's not getting him into trouble, if you take your time and get used to it properly, your off no worse than using thumb throttle...Everybody thinks you're automatically gonna twist it in a hairy situation, but you dont, just gotta take the time adn get used to it.

my friend has twist on his 400ex and he keeps it at my house so when ever my quad is broken i ride his and it take a little getting used to but im starting to like it and i think im might buy one. so if i were u i would just get one and try it out and if u dont like is u can sell it to me:p :blah:

There's a reason they're not put on quads, they are kinda dangerous. I have one on mine for about 2 months now and dont like it. I do a lot of tight trails that are bumpy and it seems like you try and give it gas, imo its way to easy to loose control. Some people can get used to it some cant. I crashed mine pretty bad a while ago, im going to put the thumb back on. Just my .02 though:)

ive been considering a twist throttle myself.but iseen a thumb throttle extender at the honda dealer yesterday.im thinking about trying that first as my thump gets cramped real bad after about 15 minutes of riding.probably wouldnt be that bad if i didnt almost cut it off a few years ago

For those who are having a hard time riding with the thumb throttles: I suggest lubing your throttle cable. I have a FCR carb, and it came with a completely new throttle cable. It was pretty new, so I never really thought about lubing it.

The other day, I was giving the carb a full clean down and the throttle just didn't feel as smooth as it should be. I penetrated the cable from end to end with silicone spray while pulling the cable in and out. MAN! What a difference!! My throttle throw is like butter now :D It's almost too easy now, I really didn't know there could be such a difference after riding with a stiff throttle for so long. I guess I just got used to that stiff throttle over time lol.

I highly suggest the silicone spray if you guys haven't tried it yet, it's worth a shot and made a world of difference for me.

can you go into more detail or do i just take it off at teh thumb control and spray down into the cable??

That's exactly what I did. I disconnected the cable inside the thumb throttle housing and then sprayed the silicone spray while I pulled the cable in and out with my hand. You know it has penetrated the entire cable when it starts dripping out at the other end by the carb. It is helpful to disconnect the cable completely at the thumb throttle so you can hold the cable vertical in your hand and let gravity pull the silicone lube down to the other end.

You could just disconnect both ends as well and spray the cable down while pulling it and get the same results :)

Everyone argues about the twist throttle vs. thumb throttle. The main reason that I don't like twist throttle on a quad is cause you only use your handle bars to turn, you don't lean through turns like you do on a bike. This forces you to push and pull the throttle while steering.

Since you use your handle bars much less on a bike, a twist throttle is not nearly as troublesome as on a quad, but you can train yourself to use one, just not my personal preference..

Yes I know you use your handle bars a lot on a dirtbike too, but definetly not as much as on a quad.

Twist throttles don't belong on quads unless you're used to them on dirtbikes. When I first started racing I had terrible "thumb pump" so I bought a twist throttle. Used it for one race then got rid of it immediately because I damn near killed myself. There is so much more control with a thumb throttle.

It's just called silicone spray. It comes in a can like WD-40. You can get it at lowes or any local hardware store will have it ;)

I have the oposite problem. I just picked up a CR250 bike, and I cant get used to the twist throttle at all.

I have always had thumb on my quads, and on my waverunners, so its new to me.

personaly i love twist trottles. Ill be honest with you tho at first they a b*t*h to get use to. they are very dangous and you have to watch yourself. after about a week or two with riding with a twist it gets a lot easier. Once you get use to it, it is ten times better than a thumb trottle i feel. You get get tired and it makes riding a lot more fun. I suggest that if you really wont one then buy one when you have a break from racing so you have plenty of time to get use to it. Once you are fully used to it you well love it compared to thumb throttle.

well, mine just got here yesterday, and I put it on, I didnt get to ride it yet cuz I still need to finish work on my silencer and do some jetting, but sitting on the quad, and turning the bars and doing everything, it felt nice, seemed a lot better than thumb. them, from what I remember if your on the track or anywheere, and you turn real sharp to the right, it's hard to bend your hand the right way to push it, well witht the twist I dont notice that when I'm just sittin there, you hand stays in a rear natural position. I'll let ya know once I get to ride it. :macho
