They are great machines in the sand and stuff from what I have seen. For mudding they are not that great because of really high gearing. You can get the gears from a Big Bear and put them in the Wolvy though and have a really light bike that can turn 28's.

is the wolverine a fairly fast machine in 2x4 mode?

They are pretty quick machines because they are really light.

I have the 2005 Wolverine, which obviously is a different bike than the 2006. Now that I have the unlocker (to ride in 2x4) it is an awesome machine! The light size and its closeness to the trail enable me to slide it around in the sand. Not as much as the Raptor, but it doesn't have the horses of the Raptor either! Actually the only other mod I am considering is a pipe to give it a little more horsepower. Other than that, it is a great sport/utility quad. On tight trails, I can keep up with my husband, who rides the Raptor. Of course he loses me on the straight aways, but that is to be expected. I do not see that many of them here in the Houston area--I've seen maybe 3 or them in the last year and a half. I think most people here want either the full bore sport or utility. I bought it so I could go through some of the tougher stuff that the Raptor cannot--and have even pulled the Raptor out of mud before. We keep a tow rope on the bike and have added the tow hook in the back. It does have its limitations due to HP, tires (I still have stock), and how low it sits with the nerf bars on, so I do get stuck sometimes too. For the most part, I stay out of the deep stuff. I did not buy this bike as a mudder. I am surprised that more people are not interested in a Wolverine because it is awesome on the trails and more technical stuff.

Yeah they are pretty cool quads. I want to get a skid plate and a slipon for my girlfriends but that gytr pipe is a little on the steep side.
