A forsale sign.:p But all kidding around aside, get 14/36 gearing, new smaller tires, K and N airfilter, rev box, and a cam.

Aftermarket filter, remove the airbox lid, and rejet. You'll get a decent increase for less than $50. Next, as they said would be an aftermarket cam. If you do the cam, I'd look at getting an 11:1 piston stock up to 76mm (0.080") if you need to bore, otherwise I'd just stay stock and rehone.

Beyond that.. buy a 400ex. ;) Unless you race the sport class of course. I don't see numbers, so I assume you're a rec rider.

Before getting the cam or piston.. I'd really look into some aftermarket tires. ;) They make a WORLD of difference. Can't really go wrong with Maxxis, ITP, or Kenda.

k&n wont make power, take the lid off and stick to ur foam, it will flow enough for your carb. also find a used carb, cam, high comp piston, and thats all i can think of thats worth putting on that quad

or you can get a K&N ;)

You can put in a cam, port the head, and put in a high comp pistion. You can also get a rev box. Curtis Sparks makes a good one. Also a 400EX carb does wonders too. But its going to cost you some money for some real power.

On my 250x, the 400ex carb was the best modification for the dollar. I found the carb on ebay for $100, and it gave the fourwheeler a quicker throttle response and a definite increase in power throughout the powerband. I used the factory jetting with these modifications:

hot cams stage 2 cam
modified cdi box
dg full exhaust
shaved head for more compression
port and polish the head
400ex carb
Wiseco high compression piston

LMAO Hot cams dosnt make a cam for the 300ex or 250x. Let me guess the guy you bought it from told you that huh? Or no, you had you dealership install a big cam and they told you it was a hotcam huh?

I apologize, I was mistaken. My uncle bought a Hot Cam for his 400ex recently. I got the companies mixed up, but that isn't the point of my post. I was sharing with some one what worked for me.

Is there a reason you don't want a big-bore kit?

Big-bore kits are great, I'd say the best bang for your buck. If you don't go REALLY big, and you're still on the stock sleeve, they're not even that expensive, the pistons are usually the same price as the stock bore size.

If it's a reliability issue, then forget modifications at all. I'd say a camshaft would have more reliability issues than a big-bore piston.

If it's a price issue, I'd say the same thing. Forget modifications at all.

The best kit I can think of, for both reliability and performance, would be a 330 kit, aftermarket cam (which requires valvesprings and rockers) and porting the head. ESPECIALLY porting the head, they're pretty choked-up in stock form. With these modifications, done properly, you'd run with 400EXs easily.
