400ex is a 2000, starting to use some oil. A friend of mine riding behide me said it smoking. The question i have is , I was thinkin about going with a JE or wesco 416 piston 10:1 or 11:1 but not really sure what cam i want? I dont want to lose any bottom end , cause I ride a lot of trails. The hotcam stage 1 is what i was thinking. But i dont want hear all that ticking noise. Does honda make a performance cam for the 400 ex like the 450r ?

HRC is the way to go if you can find one. id do a search on what engine will do what...

the smoking could also be you have bad valve seals....its letting oil pass by thus burning the oil. how many hours are on your quad? make sure when you rebuild to check all clearances including your cylinder to see if it isnt out of its tolalences. if you are going to get an aftermarket piston you mine as well bore it out...its not much more money and it is well worth the extra cc's. id also replace the valves and seats and stem seals. but thats just my opinion.
