I just started working on atv's but I am a engine builder . I manly do 4 cyl street bike motors. So I do know what im doing.
My freind has a 06 trx450er. He brought it back to the dealer for the first check up. He put the rossier full pipe, K&n filter and k&n lid. The dealer had to check the valve adjustment so they put the cam in for $60. The exhaust is on it and the dealer also jetted it. The dealer could not get the bike to run w/ the hotcam. They put the stock cam in and it ran fine. The dealer put the hotcam in and called my freind and said its all set the talked to hotcam. When he picked it up it wouldent run. So I had him bring it to my shop. I checked timing and it's right on. The decompresion arm was set at .030. I checked the book and it said. .006-.001. I set it to .005 and it wouldent start. I kept adjusting the arm by .005 incriments. When I got to .025 it started than stall. I replaced the plug it was real black. Then the bike wouldent start again. It would just pop throu the exhaust.
The dealer said this has happened before.
It sounds to me like the decommpression is not working correct.
Anybody else have a problem like this?

have you checked the cranking compression? i remember seeing a discussion about the hc2 needing more clearance on the decompresser with the 06's. something about the locating hole not being set properly. on my 05 the compression checked in at 100 psi after 25 kicks with the decomp factory set at .018. to get the same reading with the hc2 i had to open it up to .030. fired up on the first kick:p

not sure why the plug would be so black though. pilot screw may be out too far?

Im ganna check the compression in the morning. I didnt jet it the dealer did. I will check that once I get it running. I havent heard many problems w/ the hotcam2.

I got it going. I had the compression rod set at .028 and it Ran for 30 sec. At .030 it wouldnt start. But it works perfect at .029. That seems like tight specs. It did run like crap. I put a 170 main, 2.5 turns out on the f/a screew, and the pilot is a 42 I think im ganna try a 48 or 50 Ill see what I can find in stock.

I am currently installing a HC St2 in my 450, just before i close it all up, what is the right clearance for an 04 450r?
I also have a 13.1 JE piston.
should i set the decomp to 0.030?

Thanks

the only reason i set mine at .030 was because thats where i got the same readings with the compression gauge. it took 25 kicks with the stock cam and after playing around with the clearance on the decomp with the hc2 i came up with the same amount of kicks. i would guess every cam would be a little different with machining tolerances.

everything else being the same, there should be more cranking comp with the 13-1 piston. i don't have any exp with higher comp pistons and knowing where to set crank comp. the factory spec is kick til your leg falls off and it should be 108 psi. i would start with that. hope this helps.

thanks.

I have read else where to set the decompression gap at 0.030 as well, or start off so you can't even turn the thing over and adjust it so it becomes easier to turn over.

But i think 0.030 clearance sounds good enough.

The one I did was a 06 450er. I started at stock setting. When you hit the button it turned over way to fast. I worked it out and ended up the bike ran best at .029 . .028 turned over to fast. and .030 wouldnt turn over.

As far as jetting, where is his jetting at now? Did he have the dealer perform all of the jetting mods that the pipe asks for? His main, pilot, what needle, leak jet, air/fuel screw, accel. pump adjusted to? I have a Rossier full on my '06 so I might be able to help. 48 or 50 will probably be too rich. I would start with 45 on the pilot, 165 on the main. I think Rossier recommends 48, 160 but I had to go a little richer on the main.

I talked to rossier. he said 168 main, 48 pilot, 4th clip. and I went with a 170main, 48 pilot, 4th clip and 2.5 turns out on the f/a screew. I took it for a ride today and it feels good.

I cant wait to get my 04 back together.

The way you set your decomp. lever is take your right side exhaust valve clearance and (add) +0.05 (+/- 0.02) mm

I did have it set there also. I forget what the exh. clearance was but I know its lower than .029.

The way hot cam tokd me was to keep makinig a larger gap on the decompesion rod until the motor was hard to turn over than back off a little.

That sounds technical. what is a little bit!

Thats why I did it with the feeler gauge .001 at a time.

I got it perfect.

if i can remember correctly the exhaust gap is 0.012" or 0.011" therefore the decomp lever should be 0.062" or 0.051"????

are you sure it is 0.05??
