250R all the way dude
a lightly modded 250r will take care of most 400exs. and the 250r handles alot better. just make sure to find a 250r thats in good condition because a lot of them are pretty beat up.

250r will chew up a 400 and spit it out!!! but they take more maintanence and money to race.

a 250r will take care of ANY 400ex, if you can handle it. You can get them reasonable too. The only downfall will be the maintenance. ...440exking...where in MN you from?

I don't see how maintenance on a 250R is a downfall. 2 strokes are much easier to maintain. No timing belt to stretch, no valves to adjust, easy to rebuild.....

Out of the box - 400ex. With a few minor mods - 250R.

I have a stock 400ex and a stock 250R and the 400ex is faster. But the handling on the 250R is sooooo much better.

"What would be a better buy" - depends what you are going to do with it.

Pricewize a 400ex will be a better buy cause they are a dime a dozen and you can get them cheap. A better ride would be the 250R - unless you are doing a lot of trail riding then prob 400ex for gas consumption.

Huh!!! I have a stock 250r (still has the stock pipe) and my friend has a stock 400ex. My 250r is so much faster than the 400ex. The stock 400ex is so sluggish. When my buddy and I switch quads he always wants to switch back because he says my R is too fast.

out of the box a 250r is faster than a 400ex. I've rode 400ex's and they feel like battle tanks compared to an R. very heavy to lug around. My 86' is extremely light, feels like a trx90 compared to a 400ex. I would go with a 250r bro. but for reliability, i'd have to go with the ex. the things last forever for some reason. oh, its a honda :p

250r vs 400ex............they are not even on the same playing field
but if you cant ride the 400ex will make you look more skilled until you get good enough to hang on to the R

The R is ALOT faster!!! They are LESS maintenance than the 4oo! and if the engine messes up it will b cheaper to fix than the 400.

I have both. And the 400 is built up nicely too. The 400 is way easier to ride, but nothing makes you smile like an R with suspension and engine mods. It makes my 400 seem so slow, and the 400 beats the 450's regularly in drags and hill climbs. The 250r comes close to hanging with my friends CR250R though to give you an idea of the power that can be gotten out of the 2 stroke.

Yeah, my 250R is pretty lightly modded and I don't think anybody can make a 400EX beat it. I raced an MX 440 thursday and dusted him.

I rode my friends 440ex and i just couldnt wait to get back on my R. those things feel like tanks compared to the 250.

I bought a brand new 400EX back in 2000 and I liked it...then I bought a house so I sold it then a couple years back I bought a worked 250R....and the 250R is so awesome compared to the 400EX......I wouldn't own another 400EX.....
