While my engine is out for an overhaul is there a good way to flush out the oil cooler? There may be some metal in it due to the fact I was seeing metal in the oil.

Yes flush it out. Also while the motor is apart make sure you clean out the pick up tube.

What would be best to flush it out with and how should I go about it?

I did mine in the parts washer. It pushes the cleaner throu the cooler. After that I spray brake clean in it, than poor motor oil throu it.

The only real way to make sure its totally clean is to replace it.

Because you cant get inside it to clean it out properly you can never be sure you got all the metal filings out of it.

No manufacturer recommends cleaning them out for this reason!

Most engine builders wont offer any warranty unless the oil cooler is replaced on an engine that has been making metal into the oil.

good thing i saw this thread, my motor is being rebuilt, from crank bearing failure and timing chain problems, and my motor was full of metal shavings, i should either flush mine to or buy a new one, what do you think?

If you can afford it buy new one if not spend alot of time cleaning it out . alot. :D

Can you afford not to buy a new one....

One that isnt cleaned out properly could trash your new engine:eek2:

Thats why all manufactuers and engine rebuilders replace them when rebuilding an engine.

YOU CAN'T CLEAN WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE....

I put the oil cooler in the parts washer and set the hose up to the outlet side. Its very low psi.

I have a parts washer. Its a tube with parts washer fluid in it . Theres a pump that flows solvent at a low psi. If you leave it flowing backwards it will push evrything out. I let it go for about 5-8 hours. Than run oil throu it.

Yeh thats the go. Flush it with some dirty engine parts cleaner:rolleyes:

The insides of an oil cooler are like the insides of a cars radiator. Lots of small tubes.

The only way to clean it would be to remove the end tanks...

The oil coolers are only $49.00 from Service Honda brand new.

That seems like cheap insurance to me.

I was thinking of flushing mine out with oil. Didnt have any metal filings or anything but at 50 bucks i think i will just get a new one to be on the safe side
