What is the advantages and disadvantages of having a 14" Sprocket on a 400ex. Aslo wat is the stock front sproket size on the 04?

stock gearing on an 04 is 15/38. advantages are lower gearing, faster accelleration, feels like it has more power, can use higher gears a little more, some say they like it better for hills.
Disadvantages aer lower top speed, go through gears quicker, IMO it is not better for hills.

Will it take top end away from all your gears or just 5th?

mess around with the gears in this chart, its interactive.

basically its give and take, also note the difference tire size will make.

On that chart I typed in a 40 tooth for the back and it gained top end I thought you gained low end with bigger in the back?

Bigger sprockets in the front or back mean more top end it just takes more teeth doing it with the back then the front.

nut uh, add teeth to the front for more topend, smaller sprocket in the back is more topend, smaller in the front less topend, bigger in back less topend.

I would just go up a tooth in front, and if you like that next time you get a new sprocket, chain or which ever order you get em, get a smaller one in the back and you will gain lil more topend that way too.

you will go slower in every gear, not just fifth.

Bigger in back is less top speed, bigger in front is more top speed.

Since you're on a mainly stock 400ex (besides the pipe that's coming) I would stick with the stock size of 15 or if you do a lot of tight trail riding and never use the higher gears that much I'd drop it down to a 14 in the front.

I just used the link you give us and it worked perfect. I was trying to figure out what sprockets to run if I go to 22's on the rear. If you leave everything stock sprocket wise 38 teeth on the rear reads 68.62mph and changing that to a 40 tooth brings your top speed down to 65.19.

Quick thing about the gearing link posted above. Isn't the stock rev limiter 9100 rpm? The chart shows 8250 as the default and I don't *think* that's correct...

Actually I think it is closer to 8250 and an aftermarket rev limiter brings it up to around 9100. I believe the YFZ's limit is around 9100 stock. I think...:ermm:

Nah. YFZ revs to just shy of 11,000. Pretty sure stock 400EX CDI cuts in at 9100.

My bad. The rev limit on the YFZ450 is 10,750 while the YZ450F is 11,250. And my bad about the 400ex, the rev limit is 9,100. I don't know what I was thinking:ermm: .
