1.)Don't fu*k Up.

Na just playin:

Make sure you make your line with black electrical tape first.

Measure as well- Don't assume it looks right.

Have a file and sand paper on hand. File first then sand for a finished product.

For a really nice finish, after you sand the edges, and get them as smooth as possible, take a lighter to the edges. A little, and I stress, LITTLE heat, will smooth the edges, and "polish" them a little bit. If you are not comfotable with this, practice on one of the pieces you cut off first.
