I have been mowing my 5 acre yard with a 42'' Dixon. It has been doing a good job, but takes about 4.5 hours. My neighbor has a 2003 Grasshopper 61'' 4-sale $3300 FIRM. It has 1100 hours on it. He has a lawncare business and sell or trades between 1000-1500 hrs. He told me to take it home and use it for a couple of days to see if I like it. I played with it yesterday and could not find anything wrong with it. I have been told these commerical mowers can run 3000 hours with no major problems. I only put about 90 hours on my Dixon last year. At that rate, the Grasshopper should last me 20 years.

My brother in law has a grass hopper, 52 inch front mower with fold up deck. It is nice and stout. If i was you i would get a belly mower. I like the toros and kubota diesel is very sweet. Grass hoppers are well built but i would buy something with less than 800 hours if possible. The kohlers are good motors but when it comes time to replace them you run into money you dont want to give up to put into an older mower.:D

The mower that I am looking at is a mid-mount. A new one is about $8000. I can't stand that!

4.5 hours???? LORD that lawn must be humungous! What type of engine does the grasshopper have?

I use those TORO zero turn mowers they can cut a very large property very quickly due to their high-speed operation. They travel very fast while maintaining an exceptional cut.

Personally I would aim for something with a diesel engine for a big job like that. They really pay off in the end.

All 6 of my mowers are Toros or Exmarks. If i didnt have such a good relationship with my dealership, I would be running Grashoppers right now. The deck is indestructable, the hydros are ridiculously smooth, and in my opinion they are one of the best-built/engineered mowers on the market.

My own opinion, I hate Grasshoppers. The cut on them isn't to bad, but they are so long to haul them and they don't mow worth crap on hills. Exmark is the way to go. I mow for a company and that is what we use. They have an excellent cut and built good. Scags are pretty good to. I haved used those before as well.

I don't know what you could hate about the cut??? It cuts great and leaves a nice strip. My GH is a mid-mount and no longer than the other mowers I looked at. My GH has the tractor tread tires on it and holds the hills just fine! I don't have any complaints so far.

we have an exmark now for about a year thing is a beast and were strartin to do commercial the mower is feul injected and has a 27 horse engine and has a 60 in deck and for the deck its an inch thick so if u run into anything its unstoppable the blades run over 200 mph and its also designed to run in the rain and still cut a smooth cut and cutting its grass clipings 3x all the people around us are selling ther dixies and buying exmarks cause of a clean cut it does and does really good on gas with a ten gallon gas tank

I have a Turbo diesel grasshopper that i purchased last year with a 72in duramax deck with hydralic lift. I love the thing. Mows my seven acre lawn in an hour and half- two hours. The thing is a monster and itflys.

My dad's had one for about 10 years. Not a lot of hours on it, but no problems whatsoever. The only thing is that I wish it had a liquid cooled gas, or the diesel motor. The 20hp Kohler is kinda loud.

I had a buddy that used them for a small lawn mowing business while in high school. They worked great. He did mention that after changing the oil and filters on the hydro's the thing acted like a new machine again, and he also had a blade for the front to plow snow.

grasshoppers are great machines and for what your doing the mower will last you plenty of years at only 90 hours a year. I would reccomend keeping the oil changed with fully synthetic every 25 hours and that should keep the mower fine. Maybe mow at a slightly slower speed with the throttle not wide open. Im sure you could get a new mower once that one wears out from a parts mower, i know we have got them at work before. I personally love Hustler mowers, we have a 52 and 66 inch and walk behind, these things are like caddilacs compared to our exmarks ( we have a 72, couple 60's, couple 48's, and some walk behinds also and being belt driven they are so jerky and not buttery smooth like a hydraulic driven mower. At what speed do you mow and how big is your yard if you have not mentioned it yet? We mow at 8-`0 mph with the hustlers, 6-7 with the small exmarks and with sharp blades and proper engine speed its fine.
