The brand of shock wont affect travel. That is only if you go with a long travel a arms kit. For under $800, TCS is probablly the way to go.

Like honda4life said, the shock travel is dependent on the type of A-arm you have and how much travel the arms permit the shock to travel.

Best shock for under 800.00 is like asking best quad for under 4000.00. You get what you pay for. If you just want to rec ride, there is nothing wrong with the Works shocks. If you get serious about racing mx then the lesser expensive shocks will be stressed beyond their capabilities, i.e will not perform to the degree a more costly shock would perform. Its all about the internals of the shocks and how they are constructed.

well the only mx i will be doing is racing with my friends and the occasional playday at the track. but mostly the same old rec riding.

I aslo plan on going to +1 a arms and a +1 1/4 swingarm

They'll all have the same travel. Just find the company that can make you a good shock for a price you want to pay with the things on it you want. I'd vote Elka.

Aye, look at the Elka Rec series of shocks.

The Front Fox floats have 10 inches of travel and it's cake to change the spring rates, not really any other adjustability though.:)
