Hi. I am very interested in starting a project R. I want to start with a bare bones 250 and build it up over a time period of roughly 2 summers. what my question is, would $2000 be enough money to purchase a desent 250r that runs? I dont want anything too special, cause i want to mod it to my liking.

thanks

if you look around you could prolly get one for that price

I have another idea that i am considering. buy a 250 right now and fix it up for a long period of time, or keep my 2000 in the bank and when im out of college buy a new quad.

Really only you can make that decission. Do you want something new in 2-4 years? Or something used that you can ride now? Each one has it's advantages, 250r's are the best handling chassis ever made, hands down, and the motors have almost unlimited potential. But they are a 2 stroke, and require more matinence. And you don't know exactly what your getting. The motor could be a time bomb, it could last you another 3 years without you needing to do anything. With a new quad you know what your getting, but if you want a performance 2 stroke your only options are the banshee.

I was thinking about going the banshee route too, but i would assume they are more expensive to modify compaired to a 250 because there are 2 of everything. But how does reliablity compare between the two? ive heard that banshees can really be unreliable when they are modded? are 250s similar?

if there properly maintained there very reliable. parts for the banshee are more expensive because you have to get 2 of everything but there a blast to ride.
