The large main headbolts or just the headcover bolts?

I'll assume the headcover bolts that you tried to torque to 17 ft-lbs. ;) The manual is screwy. those are only supposed to be 7 ft-lbs. I wish they would fix that. It's caused a lot of headaches.

the helicoils will work great for the headcover bolts.

The manual is correct, for the 400ex anyway. I agree that it isn't real clear though.

Most people assume the torque spec for the 8mm bolt means the 8mm socket size when actually it is the one larger bolt in the middle which has an 8mm shaft size. The smaller bolts do not have a torque spec just like most of the other smaller bolts on bhte motor.

Not sure about the 400ex. But, the 300ex/250x manual is flat out wrong.. lol. They are are all (6mm X L) bolts, and the manual calls out 17ft-lbs. There are no 8mm bolts (outside of the exhaust studs) You will twist the head right off of those bolts at 17 ft-lbs, if it doesn't strip the threads first.
