View Full Version : need help loud valvetrain

i have a stock 400ex just adjusted valves but when i pulled cap off valve cover two were way off both in exhaust side one had about 1/4 inch clearance could that cause damage?? still has top end noise after adjustment anyone have any ideas???

i had the same problem your motor is always goin tick i mean it will never sound perfect. if you want look at ur vavules again and see if their still adjusted correctly but your motor while always have a little nock

more than likely you were had the motor 180 out when you adjusted the valves it will cause the symptom you are describing

Make sure it's not 180 out, if it's not check them . Welcome to the world of 400EX ownership. I was worried about loud valves at first. Now I worry if I don't hear them.

1/4" ??????? Holy crap!! When I've adjusted mine, if it was 180* out, there was zero clearance, and NO play in the sub rocker arm. Mine was loud after riding the first 20 hours or so, I got in to check and adjust and I believe the clearances are supposed to be .004 and .005........ mine was loud and MAYBE had, at most, .008 - .01............ if you had 1/4"....... meaning .25 clearance........... you might want to check things over real good, cause I'm sure that rocker slapping the valve with that kind of clearance CAN NOT be good for the internals......... how does it run? other than being LOUD?

I know this is an old thread but after searching it was the closest thing I could find to the problem I am having. Did you ever straighten the problem out? what was it? thanks
