i seen a thread about this and seen a couple of wrong top speeds in stock trim, just wanted to let everyone know, heres the order,
1.lt500 aka quadzilla-81mph
2.banshee-78mph
3.tecate 4- 76mph
4.lt250r-75mph
5.250r-74mph
6.kawi mojove(cant remember how to spell it lol) 68mph

Acceleration
lt500
banshee
tecate
250r
lt250r
mojave

this was a test done back in the late 80's, i cant exactly remeber which magazine it was, im pretty shure it was 3&4 action or somthing like that. Track was a drag course with everything stock including gearing and tires. They were comparing the qrt mile times with some of the fastest sport compact/sedan cars back in the day and the banshee and lt500 were extremely close in acceleration.

so someone can add in the newer quads if the want but ill find a link of the shoot out and post it up here.

I have an ATV Action issue with the vintage shootout brought back.. Long live the 2-strokes of a forgotten era!

It also sucks the Tecate had a crappy chassis design.. that was a great engine!!!

if only they would have produced the 1989 kxf 250.

I remember seeing the actual prototype quad in a mag but I dont remember what one.

I remember it being purple and green and looking quite a bit different than the a-2.

I am still a proud owner of an 88 KXF250 A-2. It will smoke the **** out of a stock 250r in its stock form. Then I put a 300 big bore from LA sleeve on it and it would out run a banshee and keep right next to a zilla.

I am going to be changing out that big bore to a sprocket racing 330 stroker one day...

I think that the reason that the Tec-4 was so fast was because it had working powervalves that actually did their job!

Are the Tec-4's a counterbalanced engine? Because I believe Kawie just used the direct engine from the KX250, and didn't tone it down. The old QuadRacers had powervalves, but were nothing to brag about.. now it would be a different story if Honda had used a CR top end.. :-D

its quite amazing how fast these old quads went and how they stand up to the newer aged 450's, in top speed terms, they putt goveners on them new 450's? i pretty shure that the ltr-450 has one because its efi

That sounds about right but the mojave did not do 68 its more like 55mph.

govener? they aren't 5hp briggs and stratton engines. i think rev limiter is the term you're looking for, and it doesn't matter if it's FI or carb.

If the Tecate 4 engine was a really good engine, why hasn't anyone put it in a 250r chassie? Hell if I had the money I would.:)

I wouldn't stick a Tecate motor in a TRX chassis, it would be too hard to find parts for it and you could find a much better solution, a big bore cylinder!

the 250r's fame didnt come from top speed, its the whole package, the power, handeling, buildability, and reliability. The reason it stood up over the ages is the combo of all of this. If honda started remaking the 250r with todays advanced tech. in shocks and materials to the 89 spec.s I would buy one. seems the tree huggers have won the battle. the banshee is to be discontiued, and the other 2strokes are prob. not far behind.
