View Full Version : Larocco's Leap At Red Bud???????

My two cousins are always bashin me cause I race quads. They say quads are slow and will never be able to even compare to a dirtbike on track. But I was wondering if quads could clear Larocco's leap. I watched them do the table of two at london pretty easily and was just curious if they could do Larocco's Leap.

It is damn near impossible for quads to make it. I have tried I know Pros that have tried. Its barely doable on Bikes. Thats why its given his name. They have a hump that is pretty far and quads land there. Its still extremely hairy to do. Mo:D

A few riders have managed to pull it off

its a big jump thats for sure. on tv they were talkin about how the 125's can't make it you gotta be on a 250

Mxbubs

I can do it. Anything a 250 bike can do can be done on the right quad. This theory is provable.:D

There has never been a quad make the jump. There is only maybe a handful of bikes to ever clear it. Larocco injured his back doing it and was the only to attempt hence the name. Rico the jump you are talking about was the uphill giant tabletop along the grandstands. He wasnt sure what gear he was in and pinned it thinking it was 3rd when in reality it was 4th and sailed off the top when he let go at what appeared to be 100' in the air. It wasnt but it sure looked it. I assure you we race in the 250A and 250Pro-Am class and there is no one even coming remotely close on quads. Mo

You'd have to have ballz as big as church bells ta hit that on a quad,,,something about 5th gear pinned jumps makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck..

What's a 250 bike weigh? 200lbs? And it's got what, 55hp?

And a 400ex is 375lbs and 30-35hp?

Hmmmm.... I think I'll pass. I ain't got the "church bells" for that one.

Larocc's Leap is about 155ft.

Here's a pic of Tortelli doin it.

Pro400EXC
07-23-2002, 12:28 PM
Ok,here's a computer sketch of the leap. Its about 150ft.

It could be done on a quad, but no 400ex is gonna do that one. Maybe a 40-0ex can do what the 125's do.

Of Course, Carmichael makes it look easy, especially when he has a 30sec lead after 5laps.haha Honda is eating it up. all these wins, they love it.

no one has really answered my question though. Has a quad ever cleared it. Has anyone in person seen Jones, Gust, Farr, or any of the other top riders clear that jump??????

07-28-2002, 09:05 AM
that games called motocross madness 2 and its on computer...thats a huge jump! i wonder if anybody has a picture a quad doing the whole thing

UFO and i think the other one what D.I.R.T or something like that... maybe i should dig out the disk again or just download the damn thing and start back up on it. i always liked motocross mania alot better though :blah

atv offroad fury uses the same engine btw.

07-29-2002, 03:34 PM
the jump is actually closer to 130 feet. and no quad has a chance of jumping it unless it goes about 120 mph

A4StrokeGuy
07-29-2002, 05:28 PM
Since my 2nd home is red bud i will enlighten all of society :D I've never seen a quad triple the leap, i don't see how its possible, only a few 250 bikes do it. Doubling it is simple on a stock EX. Just grab the gears and hang on. U can see all the pics u want but until u shoot it u have no idea how intimidating and huge it is. I've rode red bud 2 years and everytime i ride out there i roll over it the first time just due to the fact that its is just so huge! Don't respect the jump it will own u like a red headed step child.

Judging the size of the bike in the last pic at around 5' long and measuring that with the ramp from takeoff to beginning of down grade I would venture to say around 55-60' tops. Mo;)

i was thinking about 80, but you are probably right. quads have a lot of work to go before they get to jumping over 100 feet.

It don't really look to bad cause you don't have to do the whole thing, the landing is huge!!!!

raptor_02
07-31-2002, 07:01 PM
well you guys saying quads can't jump over 100 ft are crazy. I've seen that in person. The table of two at danielboone raceways is a little over 100ft to land on the downside and the pro's jump it like its nothing!!!!!!!!!!!! It that you on that quad sleeping cat fish??? If so was it a rough landing????

Scott
07-31-2002, 07:35 PM
100ft downhill vs 125-150ft uphill is a huge difference. On the uphill this thing called gravity is working against you. Not saying it can't be done, but I'd say it's pretty unlikely that a quad's going to do that triple at Red Bud anytime soon. Just like Mo said earlier.

Sleeping Catfish
07-31-2002, 07:41 PM
if that was me on that quad i would have posted it in EVERY thread. that is a guy from bluetraxx. i max out at about 8 ft of air.;)

I've been to daneil boone and stood right next to the table of two's while pro's jumped it and yes it's a phat jump,,but I don't think it's over 100ft more on the lines of a 80 - 90 ft jump I think. It's nothing compared to laracoo's leap,,,that's an uphill jump..

raptor_02
08-02-2002, 07:12 PM
i know the table of two at london is no comparison to Larrocco's Leap. But no one on this thread could do the table of two and if you can you need to be in the pro class!!!! And the downside of the table of two is 110 ft easily. That's being told from guy's that have raced there for years!!!!!!

08-05-2002, 08:09 AM
But the downside is about 30 footlong I'd say from the point you leave the ground to the top of the downside it's around 80 foot...i'm not arguing with you,,it's a big jump,,,I guess a simple call to daniel boone could answer are question huh..:D :D the jumps not the hard part it's getting the speed up to hit it that I see as a problem...

08-05-2002, 08:38 AM
That has go to be teh crazyist thing ever. I would would go at that 5th gear pinned and then gear down real fast ,slam the brakes, jump off and hope my quad makes it.

08-16-2002, 01:35 PM
well call daniel boone up rico and let's find out. I don't care how long they say it is, it is still one **** of a jump!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a picture of Carmichael clearing it with ease and doing a tail whip. It is in the July 2002 issue of Cycle USA for districts 15,16,17,22,23. Looks too big for me.

Nausty

I think bubba stuart has cleared it on a 125:eek: I think it would be possible if a quad could get the run on it.

08-20-2002, 09:39 PM
The table of two at Dainel Boon is 94 feet. All pros cleared it know problem in the mud at this years nat. race.

I know for a fact that Dana Creech can easily jump a 100 foot jump. So I bet he could do it on a quad if anyone can.

It is do-able..........Been there seen it..........It is do-able on a quad provided you can hit 4 gear pinned..........Doing the physics on paper, you need to be around 65mph.....I make a 105ft double all day long at my buddies farm track. We call it King Kong. It has about a 10ft landing in case you come up short. Im doing 105ft, fourth gear, and Im not a pro.

yea, a quad would need a half mile runway to clear lorracos leap, i want to see metzger pulla double backflip over that baby

I dont have a pic of the king kong jump yet..........its really not that hard, just pin it in fourth gear and shoot straight over, not much lift.........Before I jump any big jump, I watch my buddies on their dirtbikes jump it so I can see how the jump is throwing them. I havent gotten my bike finished yet, as soon as I do I am going riding with him and will get some pics.

Here is a pic of a big double at his gravel pit, I have posted this one before.

Spader tried it in like 98 or maybe earlier. He got pretty hurt doing it. No other Pro has tried it (seriously tried it) since then that I know of.

It looks doable but conditions would have to be perfect to make it in one piece.

Gust and Jones have never made it over.

H5 should be out in October. I'm feeling Ok, just real sore right now. I should be back in action for sure by Macon, if not by January.

I haven't seen the High Octane shoot from Colorado yet. I heard it looked good, but I will have to wait for a rerun I guess.

I played around on a Moto for a few days and really liked it. It seems to be a great out of the box machine.

I have it recorded on video tape although the tape is being sent out to sguexer(spel?) with my crash and I got a lot of other stuff on there. I can do awsome regular can cans now every time and I think i'm gonna go for a no footed can tomarrow, I know I can do it. I can do it on the ground and the one footed can is so easy now and I am pretty good at landing side saddle. Oh yah and I can almost click my heels on a heel clicker. I'll bring a camera and see if I can get my friend or my dad to get a few pics of me.

lol nausty. the no footed cans are so easy. the first time you do one you will wonder why you never did em before, it just feels so right to do it. clickin your heels together isn't that hard either you just gotta remember to scoot your ase up as far as ya can.

yah I think I'll go for a no footed can on a real jump and see if I can really do it. i can do it on the ground so easy and I feel like I can do it in the air. But man on the heel clickers it feels so weird when your floating up to the bars, it feels awsome though.

I also had my 2nd race and didn't go to well. it was my first time at that track and at the beginning off the race there was ruts a foot deep and the quad had to go out for practice 2nd or so and at first it was funny watching the first group go and get stuck and one guy flipped over the bars when he hit the deep stuff it stopped him so fast. At least it was funny until I had to start go out there and basicly only the right side was wore down and the left side was terrible. I got stuck once on my main, the mud was basicly holding my entire frame up and a-arms and took forever to get un stuck and then I kinda overshot one berm and then I came in to fast on another trying to catch back up and ended up hitting a little wall, its hard to explain that one and I got a terrible start because of the mud and basicly because there was still guys riding off the track and everyone was revving their engines like the gate was gonna drop and i'm thinking "man these guys are pretty excited the gate pry isn't even gonna drop for a bit until they get off the track" WRONG, lol. First heat was alright I got stuck once since I started in the middle but I ended up passing about half the riders coming from last or so. lol, i just wanted to tell you guys about my 2nd race. Oh yah I got signed up for the ama and i'm not even 16. hehe

08-26-2002, 10:20 AM
i could get over that in 4th gear, no problem, if i had some very very tyall gears and about a 1000 foot running start, that a big *** jump:eek: this is my biggest jump, i think they r about the same distance and height
