Rear axle hub nut

when removing the rear axle hub nut is it ok to put the bike in first and turn it against the gears to get it losened?

That's how I used to do it until i got my air tools.. Or I had my buddy get on and hold the brake.

Sure, I'd also suggest making something up to hold the brake lever down if you don't have someone to sit on the bike.

you mean foot pedal. push the pedal down, and try some vice grips on something to hold it there without over-squeezing the metal and you should be golden.
